I'd trade you my certs for your degree

But really, I think its a very good idea to go for some certs.
IMO you need 3 things to go far in IT...Degree, Certs and Experience.
This seems to apply mainly to those who are just starting out.

Good luck!

Certs never hurt.

IMMEDIATELY work on A+, then take one M$ exam so you can put MCP on the resume.

Starting out in IT in this economy is a little rough.

I would immediately contact all IT recruiting companies in your area. Many of them will have contract assignments that may last a few weeks up to a few months doing stuff like deployments or short term help desk work.

The job may sound crappy, but starting out, you will gain a lot of practical experience.

After you get A+, MCP, and a few months of contract work under your belt, you can probably get a decent Technician type job. ($30 - $35K in the GA area).

Congrats on the degree and good luck with the certs and job search!

I normally wouldn't harp on certs so much, but having a CS degree, which is looked upon as primarily a programmer's degree where I'm from, having an entry level certification like A+ or MCP 2000 would benefit you greatly. What are you interested in? With your CS background, I would think you would be a good candidate for a MCDBA or Oracle DBA with some study. There is a pretty high demand for that right now, but it has to be something you know that you are interested in.

Either way, you need to get some experience under your belt in the meantime. Even if that means apprenticing at a local computer or network shop for little or no pay, part-time. Out of the "big three" listed above, EXPERIENCE is king.

Not to make u feel bad... but too late!

If u are CS major and can't get a job offer before you graduate... U are in trouble,.. there many job for programmer and developer position. If u have 3.5 GPA and up, u are set for a job.

Good Luck for job hunting... Just have to send out a lot of resume & email

certifications can only help you...
Have you tried using headhunters even for consulting work to fatten your resume up?

I was wondering why you'll bother to do a A+ cert. I think you could have gone directly to a CCNA since A+ is not a pre-requisite to CCNA. I did the CCNA cert without doing A+ it is quite manageable. Of coz the more important pt here is time and $$$ you will save.
