Hello, everyone:

I like to ask computer instructors questions.

What does it take to become a computer instructor?
Do you need experience first?

How do you land your first teaching job?

Please let me know your insights.

Thank you

It really depend on the company that you want to work with. Work experience is always a plus. Education and certification also are consideration...

I was an MCSE Instructor for a while. If you plan on teaching application based classes to end-users, experience is minimal as long as you can teach the basics of the application.

If you plan on teaching network administration or some other technical classes (i.e. MCSE, CCNA, etc), experience in a production environment is critical.

I got my teaching job through a friend. If there is a New Horizons learning center in your area, they hire Instructors with no experience.

Teaching is fun, but you should gain at least a few years of hands-on experience in a production environment before you start looking into teaching jobs.

and ppl pays thousands to learn from instructor who has no practical experiences or whose theoretical experience is not of telecom, engineering or CS, but from the class that just *graduated* a week ago...

and we wonder why in the world our neat certificate mean so little in the eyes of IT manager worldwide...

blind leading the blind...

*which reminds me of this guy in the net+ forum... no IT experience, went to a tech school, graduated, got first job ever in 2 weeks from that school to teach the net+ class he just graduated from, and then came here again asking us to explain multimode fiber because the class asked him about it and he didn't know...

yay!!! go IT go!

Hello, everyone:

Thank you for your replies. They are very helpful.

You know this is what I am going to do. I trained users one on one or a small group at work on application usage. I don’t think I have done it in a class. I need to try it out to see if I can teach computers. I am going to do some computer teaching volunteer work to see if I can do it or not. This way if I am more confident, then I will be much better off.
Some people know how to work on computers but they may not able to teach. Some people may able to teach computer but may not be good at working on computer that well. Of course it is good that a person has these two good qualities together, which can teach computer and can work with computers. Nobody is perfect.

I am trying my teaching interest through volunteer work and give myself to see what it is like and is it teaching for me or not?

You dont try you dont know.

Anyone else has any feedback and insights on this, please feel free to reply. I love to hear from your teachers point of views.

Thank you
Happy Holloween 10/31 Friday

good, volunteer etc would be a good start.
I have always thought of giving back through that method, but what do I know about applications... and what good is it to teach them OSPF? so checkbook volunteerisim it is!

...

so your skillset would be handy for that audience.

remmeber, documentation, documentation, documentation.

develope your coursework and document everything, it would all come in handy. Write down everything, procedure, heh. maybe they even let you sell your courseware you print from kinko for 30 dollars for the class...

anyway, sounds good have fun, never know what anything leads to, who knows, maybe you will start there free, and thye let you offer more advance course with charge, and you get lots of references, then maybe one of them whose children is a big shot at xyz company and heard about how wonderful you are from his mom and you become this bigshot global corporate trainer.

Hello, everyone:

Thanks for your feedbacks. I called last Friday a place that they had computer teacher volunteer and they said they would have someone to call me back. I have not heard from them yet.
I found it in the internet search.

I have computer experience but no teaching in a classroom experience.
I like to try it out to explore my potential.

The statment of "Those that can't, teach"

I am not sure about this. I am sure we have people in this site can teach and can work on computers.

Computer is my life. To me, When You work at the computer field for awhile, you have the abitlity to instruct other people on what to do in computers. Why not try it?

Have a fun day, everyone.

There is the corollary that states that there are no absolutes. Those that can and have and still teach also know how to spot buffalo shite spread to mislead others.

When you are too old to hunt you can still teach the new braves how to read buffalo shite. Native American proverb.

If you really want to be a real good instructor get a bachelors degree at least and lots of experience.

You need a masters degree or Ph.D to teach at a university. Masters to teach at most junior colleges.

Some will except a bacheleors and tons of experience.

Overall, you wont make more as a teacher but it provides excellent job security compared to mostly all other jobs. I have worked for colleges/school districts all my life.

There is a badside to this. That is every becomes stagnet and falls behind technology because they arent being forced to learn to keep their jobs. My junior college professor has no clue what is going on with networking yet he still teaches it. He teaches old methods that are not in use today.
