| Hello im new to the message board, i hope the is the correct forum for my topic. I was just wanting anyones opinion from here if its a good idea for a guy thats 19 (me) to pursue a college degree in the IT field..im lookin into information systems and i hear a lot of bad talk about a paper degree and certifications; and that to make it in this field you need experience, but i am only 19 years old and fresh out of tech school i got my a+ and n+ certs there; and had some hands on expericne there. I still however want to earn a bachelors in this field. I just want to know if its a good or bad idea going after the 4 yr degree. or should i just take an entry level and work my way up. anyones thoughts are appreciated. thank you | |

| A degree is good to have, but you really need to find an internship or part time job to demonstrate real-world experience. Even if you have to work for free or next to nothing a couple days a week right now. Otherwise it will be very difficult for you to get a job that pays well enough to sustain yourself when you complete your degree. | |

| It is very good to have a degree in these times, even if you have the same certs or expirence as the next guy, whoever has the degree will pretty much have a better shot, unless he messes up on the interview. Interships can be hard, but hangout at your schools computer labs and get in with those guys, at first you might be able to hang around and learn, then if they have an opening, they already know you and know that your interested and you could possibly land it. good luck, don't drop out, stick to it, it will get tough. | |

| Definately get a degree.
An internship will be very valuable. If there is a New Horizons learning center in your area, they always hire lots of interns.
Good luck with whatever you choose! | |

| Get a degree for sure. Will last you a lifetime in termsof friends and contacts.
Plus, with this job market, it'd be good to head to school and ride it out.
Best of luck.

| Another vote for a degree. After MUCH consideration, I'm starting towards my CS degree` this spring. But it'll be at night so I can continue working...little different situation but regardless, go for a degree. |
