| Why is it IT managers know nothing about IT except for what they read in the papers. I have to use an IT section due to internal politics in my orginisation. I know there staff they have an excelent DBA. Do they use this guy on database projects? No Chance. They are afraid he will show them up.
Is it the same everywhere else out their?

| I had one manager who was very much like that. He had to be the first to do anything new that we where rolling out so he would be the "expert". He was a Jackass.
My current Manager... Once upon a time used to be an "IT" guy. Now he's just a glorified Project leader/Paper pusher. In the 3 years I have worked for him He has rolled up his sleeves and jumped in the trenches a total of 1 time. If we have a crash or anything he's the first one out the door at 5:00. Also a jackass.
I'd love to work for someone who just once who showed some real sense of leadership.
IT is makeing me real bitter of late.

| I think it depends on the company and individual.
Last place I worked, our Project Manager was very skilled technically. If we ran into problems with code, time allowing he'd jump in with us and try and help.
He knew operating systems very well, and had a good handle on hardware technical issues.
I've also run into PMs that are clueless - so no, I don't think it's the same everywhere.

| Mabee there are some good ones out there. The one thing I have noticed with my last two firms is that the senior IT management last did IT in the days when you changed disks on the mini every time you ran a different program! And the other managers we have had of late are from the "managers dont need to know what they are managing as long as they can manage" school of thought. |
