| Someone mentioned Stability in another thread and I got to wandering what the average time spent by most of us at a company/workplace.
I ran a Barber shop for 17 years before getting into IT and since then I've been at the same place for 3+ years.
Whats the longest and shortest for you guys??
Also do you think its important to show stability on a resume or varied experience?

| The longest is as a warehouse worker for seven years, while I was in college. The longest in IT has been 2 years, and I'm almost at 2 years in my current position, but I plan on staying here a bit because I think some stability is helpful on the ol' resume. | |

| For me its the experience level that you are exposed that matters. There is no use doing same old entry level job if you are not promoted (good employees only) .
For me it min has been 21/2 year and max is continuing 3+ as the employer is providing me a lot more challenge . i have started as Store and Purchase Inventory management assistant . then moved on to Direct Customer support for ISP operation , then International Transmission ( all type of muxs , modems config etc and currently shift incharge for Satellite earthstation and Internet Leased lines for 100 odd customers. Money wise there has been no drastic improvment but yes there is 5-8% annual increase . I have been offered 20-25 rise by rival cos. But sticking here as there is much more to learn and then to take somethig else.
Its good to stay at cos for atleast 2-3 years as you can learn throughly your area. And remember its always going to pay you in long run when you learn horizontal i.e more number of related things and concepts.
There is no stability for those who refuses to learn new thing and grab the opportunity.

The views are my personal one and I am not trying to offend anybody. Unknowingly If that happens to somebody , then i sincerely appolozise to it.

| Difficult to answer this one is.
My average stays have been overall 1.5 yrs.
My current job has me staying 2.5yrs and rising.
I believe it is very important to show stability in one's working history. Two things employers generally always look for unless desperate are stability and experience.
A minmum of 6 months and an average life of one year in any job with sufficiently good reasons for changing employers is enough.
Regardless of experience in skills, a record showing more than 6 months unemployement tells an employer that that particular individual is not employable or may not last if he found suddenly greener pastures.
Experience and stability are very important to employers.

i think that was me...
the last two jobs i had was for 1.5 years at each location, i left the first job because i had reached the glass ceiling, and i either had to marry into the family or change my last name to toady..
my current job has virtually unlimited growth opportunities, which i believe is the necessary ingreedient for low turnover..
