One more thing i am wondering about as i dive head first into the it world. How effective are the boot camps that cram all the info in in a matter of days. For 5000 dollars would i be better off going to aculpulco and taking my books to the beach for three months, or listening to someone cram too much info into me for 8 days? Particularly i am referring to the mcsa program at new horizons. Any opinions on the accelerated study programs?

Book your plane ticket now!

Of course, as always - just my opinion!

Seriously though, do you seriously think you can really learn so much information and retain it in your brain within 5 days?

I took a 12 week course once, and that wasn't too bad (but it was for CIW, so may be easier ??), also that 12 week course was 2200, in the end I did feel it was too much money spent. I can learn pretty well from reading books and practising. Maybe first invest about $30-60 on a book and see how that goes before spending so much money.

Good Luck!

Not sure about your area but in the UK they have a dodgy reputation for quality of trainers etc.

Take your books to the beach!

buy books, buy or borrow some videos, get practice exams... boot camps seem like a waste to me

Well in About five days, (evenings i mean) I read and studied the A+ book what would have cost me 8 days and about 5k only cost me five nights and 34.99 for the book. Judgement is as follows: Bootcamps are bs. Buy the books folks. Thanks for all of your recomendations.

I do not believe that the boot camps will help much if you don't already have a good foundation with the product(s)/skills you are looking to get certified in. Hands on is the best learning tool. Make the mistakes yourself...you'll learn it faster and retain it longer than if someone was to tell you what to/not to do.

Being certified does not necessarily mean you are an expert....and visa versa.

My 2 cents

I agree with StevoC. Bootcamps are not meant for those without experience in the field. They are meant for those that work with the product and really do know it, they just need uninterrupted time to focus on the exam objectives. Espcially if you're referring to a camp to do the basics of IT that are covered in A+ and Net+.

After recently attending one of these "bootcamps" as I like to keep my hand in on those subject areas which I don't use that much, I found 90% of my time was spent helping the other students understand the concepts taught that day. They are fast paced and there is hardly any time to review subject matter so if you don't take it in first time forget it!!

So, as others have pointed out, I would only advice people to attend these for the following reasons:

1. You use the product in you day to day work surroundings and need to get certified.

2. You have basic knowledge from reading books, home setup etc.

3. Refresher training - it is amazing how much of the basics you forget as you progress up the ladder.
