| Hey you're soon going to be a certified programmer. Congratulations! I don't know much about the job market in London, but in the US, there currently seems to be a greater demand for programmers than system admins and support staff. And of course, everyone hiring is looking for people with several years of experience. The "chicken before the egg" syndrome. But that can be overcome.
I would follow the usual job searching methods. Go to the online job boards and post your resume. In the US we have Monster.com and Dice.com. You probably have similar sites in the UK. And most importantly, tell everyone you know that you are a MS certified programmer and looking for work. I have found that the chances of finding a job through a friend are much greater than through a job board or agency. If you have any PC user groups in the UK, go to the meetings and make friends. Every month when I have time, I attend a local Visual Basic users group meeting, and it seems like everyone in the group is employed as a programmer.
Good Luck,

| Hello wildscribe,
Thank you for your advice.
I am creating software for 8 years already. Therefore I could not say "chicken before eggs". I undestood, that I need a certificate for my CV, therefore I am going to pass the exams.
However, thanks again. | |

| for support staff? Like a junior admin position? I have tried posting my resume on Monster.com, Dice.com, Computerjobs.com, Hotjobs.com, etc, etc, I have a certification, I tried to call up several companies regarding possible positions, emailed my resume to AT LEAST 20 recruiters, and can barely get a response, let alone an interview. I tried the online thing but people seem to just ignore what you have to say, and I dont know many people in the IT field. Any other options? | |

| I find that the key to finding a job during a slump (I hate to use the word depression) isn't what you know, but who you know. Get out of the house and get involved in some form of professional organizations. Contact the companies for which you are certified and inquire into local user groups. Contact training centers about user groups and open forums. Look into the GIAC mentoring program.
The contacts you make will be the key to getting your foot in the door. MOst jobs are filled before they are posted externally by employees who "Know a good candidate". Also, many companies offer a bonus to employees for bringing in new talent. It is incentive for those of us wwho are involved in user groups to meet others. Not to mention in the off chance you become unemployed or go looking for work, you have contacts locally and possibly nationwide.
Also, look to this forum for help. My company several open positions from middle management to Development to support staff. We have an IT staff of approx. 300, and presently have one job is listed externally, however, at least 4 others will go external soon. Follow the link below:
