How long did it take you to break into the IT field? (Your first full time IT job.)

I sort of got my first job by accident. Wasn't trying to get into the It field per se, just to get into any field. Once I got in, I stayed. Changing jobs from mainframe operator to Unix admin, however, took about two years.

I sort of fell into my first IT job too. I just new the right person. He ran his own bussiness & knew my parents. I was 15 & really had no intention of working quite yet. I had fixed his home computer before so he knew that I knew what I was doing. He needed a Network Anaylst & a PC/Netowrk support person who could help out when they switched from there lovely WANG computers to IBM Pentium 100MHZ running Windows 3.11! I was down with PC hardware & troubleshooting, but I hadn't had any experience with networking! What a way to get experience! It was great! I was very fortunate, and he was lucky too because he didn't pay me much to do what I did! $5.50/hr. But it was good experience (expecially for my first job) & it paid better than minimum wage! Plus it got me started in IT.

It took me a little over 3 months after I got my A+. I got a help desk support job at a local internet company. I love it but I wish sometimes I could be in the field working then answering phones in a small cubicle... Maybe one day!!!

I have a WANG running in my house. I got it from a teacher I had in high school. It's a dedicated snake machine. I also have an 8 inch WANG (heh) disk somewhere. I like to whip it out from time to time and impress people by it's size.

Dropped out of school in november, got my A+ in January, Network+ in March, start work at a helpdesk on the 8th. Of course, I've got a few years experience working part time in various capacities, but this is the first full time job, and an opportunity I filled, instead of creating it for myself.

Most definitely, I can already see where getting a degree will be needed to get to the places I want to go. But if I had spent one more day at that school...(well, truth be told I'da prolly hit one more party and one more sorority girl..but I digress)

However, I know that, I needed to take some time before I will be able to settle down into a classroom and work with the intensity college demands, shit, I'll worry about college when I'm old and grey, you know, 21 or so

Your story is the same as mine. Had to much fun in college did not make enough money working for a local ISP and then had to leave. Got my A+ and my first real job at a computer help desk for an engine company. Now I am getting ready to go back to school to finish up my degree because the Certs got me the job the degree and experience will get me the promotion
