I thought Spud was still a student...

How's the resume coming along Spud? Feel free to email it to me and I'd be happy to help you out. One of the many entreprenuerial endeavors I have been on was running a resume consulting shop

Simple,

Get to the point,

Carefully, pick out the action word,

A term that used by recuriter, not the job area.

For every point you put on a resume that you know how to do.
Always be prepared to give a clear and example and how it was handled.

I'm pretty unhappy with my resume too. I've sent it out to over 30 job openings that i thought i was qualified for but i've only heard back from 2 or 3. I have a BS in CIS, an MCSE, MCSA and 3+ of experience from network tech to MIS Manager. I was even told i'm too young by some AXXXole the other day at a job interview....

I'm finding it takes more than one resume. I get better results by tailoring my resume to the job posting. I guess I shouldn't say much. I get lots of interviews but no jobs yet. I got layed off in Oct. and turned 40 in Jan. 10 years experience. Maybe I should dye my hair...

Amen! At long last! A resume is trying to sell yourself.

WOuld you sell a car the exact same way everytime someone looks at it, or would you try and customize your sales pitch to fit the customer -- if you answered the former, congrats, you can be a telemarketer for the rest of your life

Of course you need a different variation on the same theme for each job application! Do you think a hiring manager is not going to know that you are sending a "skelton key" resume? Do you think that they see any humor in the fact that before you have the job you are applying for, you are already cutting corners, eventhough you are trying to impress them?

I may sound a bit annoyed by this, and I apologize, but I see 80 resumes a week, and most of them are junk. I feel like writing them back "Don't waste my time", but that would be... well... wasting my time some more

Does that sound encouraging Freak? many of these applicants are genuine job seekers and am sure you are making a point but remember everyone started from somewhere. I know there would be lots of inadequate resumes in terms of it's structure and even content that's while resumes are read to draw up a shortlist of candidates whose details fit the job and person spec. Hence I think regardless of what you think of those resumes does not put you in a position to make a comment like that. I know you are an educated person who is very helpful to this site, and I've even visited your site on several occasions. I was a bit disappointed by your comment above. No hard feelings, I just think everyone should know that they started from somewhere before they got to where they are now. I believe regardless of what anyone says, if an individual wants to attain anything in life through a focused and determined attitude they can realize that objective. I don't know those people who applied for the role you're talking about in anyway, it's just that comments such as the one you listed is not encouraging at all. Well, just my opinion thanks for listening.

Thanks for your reply and for helping me make my point.

I agree that we all started somewhere. My first resume probably sucked -- and that's probably why I didn't get a job after my first interview. But I learnt from mistakes and tips I was given, which is why I felt like posting these quick tips.

Yes, bad resumes are a waste of time to hiring managers. I think that sometimes the truth has to be a bit brutal before people start paying attention. A resume should not say why the job is perfect for you -- but why you are perfect for the job.

A resume is a sales pitch so effective that I have to feel compelled to pick up that phone and call that person right now. That is how we create that short list. THe others go straight to the trash.

I am not saying that this is fair or perfect. It is just the way it is. I am trying to give job seekers an inside look on how it happens once they have sent that resume, not to discourage them, but to give them more chances to get that guy to pick up that phone and call them.

No offense taken. You are entitled to your opinion, and you were clearly expressing it -- not trying to flame.
