After a grueling 6 months of job fairs, interviews, recruiters, searching the papers and the web, it finally happened. Not surprisingly, I got an interview from giving my resume to an acquaintance who knew someone who worked for a web-based company. I just want to give a little advice to those of you (like me) who have been cramming away for certifications but don't have the years of corporate business experience that all the companies seem to want nowadays. Forget the web, forget the papers.. they are going to hire people with 3+ years of experience almost every time. From my experience with job fairs, over 100 people with more experience apply for the same position you do most of the time too. Talk to people! Even if you don't really know them, but you think they might be able to help, or know someone who might. Until the market recovers completely there is going to be this continued overflow of unemployed IT workers. Unfortunately for us, they got laid off from their previous companies and are much more likely to be picked up by new ones. So take my advice or not, getting out their and networking seems (to me at least) to be the one semi-effective way to get your foot in the door. The certifications help, but by themselves they won't usually get you in front of the IT manager or the human resources department. His buddy will!

That is how I got my current job. I had about 2 yrs of School no certs and less than a year of real world experence and My soon to be wife's friend worked for a large company that had a large helpdesk and he said to give him my resume and after about 4 months ( I had forgotten I had even gave the resume to them) I got a call and 2 months of interviews and phone calls to ask question I finally go the job. I hardly new the guy and he really helped me out because he was in the same boat about 3 yrs prior. Mabye it was paying his dues since he was there earlier or what.

I am glad for the help because My boss now has advertised for the job before and recieved 1000's of apps so just knowing someone just a little and being a nice person who new a little got me the job.

NETWORKING is not just a computer term people it will help and if not now in the future.

It does help to have buddies. However, I got hired at my first IT job without knowing anyone "on the inside". So, it can happen that way, too. Congrats!

Thanks for the words of encouragement guys. I worked at a couple of small places as a technician before now, but this is my first real administrator job. Definitely looking forward to it, and glad that 3 years of hard work getting into IT is finally paying off. I had plenty of times where I almost gave up and took a dead end job somewhere.. but instead I stuck with it (and racked up the credit cards big time) to keep trying for something that I love to do, instead of something that just pays me enough to get by on. Potatohead, dont worry bro.. your time will come too. From your posts I (and I am sure a lot of other people) have seen that you have a lot of motivation, initiative, and determination to succeed as an IT professional. I have no doubts that some company will see that too. Just keep working towards your goal, and you might find that everything falls into place when your'e not expecting it.
