Certifications and IT jobs/Salaries - IT Placement Agencies

Hi - I am JUST breaking into the IT field and I had a question about IT placement agencies. Can anyone recommend any good ones, based on either personal experience or word of mouth? Basically, I have my A+ and MCP, a strong unofficial computer background and expertise, but no real field experience at all.

I realise I am most likely looking at a help desk job, if that lucky, and maybe it's just where I live (Philadelphia) but there are very few positions in the papers and online and because I have experience with regular placement agencies I thought it might be something I should try with my IT job hunt.

But my other question is will an IT placement agency be any help to someone like myself with no experience? Also, are there positions I am possibly qualified for other than help desk that I am overlooking? I am not expecting to make bigs bucks, but ideally I would like to make what I am making now doing Human Resources work ($12/h) Thanks for your help.

I work at a helpdesk right now and it gives me alot of time to study for my certs and also gives alot of experience in different platforms. I would also suggest there are entry level jobs for people to run backups of servers and monitor to make sure that if they are not responding someone is on top of it before the users even notice. Also, might look into a computer Tech. I did some of that were you go to the person's house and do the work there, that was some good experience and also helps you with the customer service side of things which is a part of the job no matter what anyone thinks. You are support and have to be able to deal with the customer so an on call Tech may be a good start...I know around here even to get into a entry-level tech job they want you to have your A+ and/or MCSE or you have to know someone already at the company. To even get helpdesk these days you will need a mcse or ccna and experience.
Today's market is very horrible for new techs and it does not show any signs that it will get better, atleast not for now.

Try to get any position that is computer oriented and try to maybe build Pcs for other and troubleshoot to make that resume better.

Actually, things are picking up, now. Whether new techs with certification will be able to get a job is still anyones guess. But college grads with 4 year degrees should find alot of demand, and companies willing to hire without experience.

I'm currently workin' at a computer rental company, I got my CCNA about a year ago and it diddnt open any doors for me so I had to start here.. Its not bad though after 6 months my managers and clients love me, I run my own shop and I can mess with all kinds of new stuff... So I think my job is OK for now..

Heres an idea. Visit the small computer repair shops in your city. Just open the yellow pages, to get a list. Make your you look & act very professional, and have your resume professionally done. Go in and sell yourself, ask if they have any open positions, if they say no, thank them very much for their time, but ask if they know of anyone/or any other shop that can use your expertise. placement agencies are not that much of a help, they pest you for answers and you do not hear from them.

playing 20 questions is worthless and having them say "we will keep your profile on our records and if a macth comes up, then we will consider your resume"

Best way to get a job is to promote yourself and sell your services and be goos at that, no one will get you ahead but yourself.
