How many of you worry?

| Hi
How many of you worry about what will happen when you get old? Already the old IT job seekers are neglected. Is it because the industry is new?
Consider an old Electrical Engineer (Say 48 yrs). He is experienced and he will get a job (a senior post.). He is in an advantageous position compared to a 21 yr old Engineering fresh graduate.
Imagine a 48 yr old IT professional.

Note: I am still young, in my very early 30s.

| I think that is why you must always look out for number one. You should never sit on your laurels and just hope things will be good. You need to constantly keep a wary eye behind you.
I've got a pretty secure job right now, but I'm working tons of hours for salary. My salary is decent, but I'm always looking for that next opportunity. I am going for certs and an MBA at the same time. I want to be in a position to retire by the time I'm 50.
You also need to visualize where you are in the pecking order of business. If you're a senior engineer and feel confident that your job is secure, add something to your resume. In this day and age, you just don't know when the bottom will fall out of the business, like we've seen from Cisco, Lucent, Motorola, Intel, etc.

| I'm looking to retire in 6 years. I'm in my very late 30's but have been with this same company for 18 1/2 years. After an employee hits the rule of 70 (age + years of service = 70), they are eligible for early retirement. Now, whether or not it will be financially feasible to retire at that time is another story, but it's nice to be able to see the light at the end of the tunnel. I will probably retire from here and then get another job that has absolutely NOTHING to do with computers, like cutting up veggies for the salad bar at HyVee!
I can see me doing my current job (Computer Operations Supervisor) for a lot longer, though, than my previous position here which was PC Support Specialist. I wouldn't really be too enthusiastic about crawling around on the floor and lugging monitors around when I was in my 50's!

| Don't WORRY and be HAPPY!
Think YOUNG and will be one...
The key is to keep yourself alive and happy.
Don't worry too much, otherwise what is the point to live. There are too many thing that we cannot control, even we try hard.
Move on.. |
