| I was laid off two years ago from Motorola in Tempe, AZ. Really made me decide what I wanted to do with my life. | |

| I think you need a 4th option: surviving rounds of layoffs! | |

| Hard_Coder, since you asked, I'll tell you. I hated my job at Motorola, I hated living in Phoenix, I disliked the person I was trying to share my life with. So, in a matter of two months during the spring of '99, I made 3 huge changes and 1 change was made for me. I got a divorce, sold my house, got laid off, and received my BS degree. I decided that for me to be happy, I needed to move home, which is Albuquerque. It took me 2.5 months to find a job as a Network Technician with a large accounting firm. Now, I'm with another accounting firm, working as a Network Consultant, am remarried to a wonderful woman, and am buying a house this week. Life is great! | |

| Crutch, thats great. On my end, i packed my bags and from Western Arkansas to Dallas i went. There is so much opportunity here in Big D. although, i havent been married and divorced... i have a degree in CS, a new home (just finished being built in March) and a great job. Maybe ill find someone to share it all with, if not, oh well, ill enjoy my money and my new home! | |

| See my "Don't Fear the Reaper" thread; I'm being laid off (permanently) in a couple weeks. Company going bankrupt. | |

Sorry to hear that eheinz! What are you planning to do next?

| First step is to find another job, preferably as a business analyst. My primary pursuit right now is heading for the database field and pursuing DBA. I actually planned on using my company's tuition reimbursement to return to college (probably for MBA), but that's not going to happen this fall now - can't swing paying it all on my own at this point.
I have also applied to a few help desk/desktop support positions. The package allows me some time, but the sooner I can find work the better.
I'm actually not severed until Aug. 24, so right now I spend half my day working on wrapping up my current projects and the other half using the company's resources to look for jobs or read DBA material! Mix in a few minutes of caging the scorpions of fear in my head and readjusting to a positive outlook that this will lead to a better job with more opportunity, and I'm golden!!
Thanks for asking (and listening)!

| It's hard to see it at the time, but a layoff can be a good thing for some people....
more tech layoffs in Atlanta
I survived the 4th round since Feb. this year at a dot-com. This company I work for has shed each time about 5-6% of its workforce (it had maybe 500 people)
...somehow I do not think they are done with laying off ....They just axed about 25 people yesterday.
I would not be prepared well if there are more layoffs. I *just* faced disciplinary action from a mid-level manager (who is afraid for her own job)
I do not think it's over - Atlanta dot coms are still falling apart.

| I am in the San Francisco area and was laid off after working very hard for a company. Its a shame how management of these dot coms treat their employees. I and 90% of the company I was working for were never told of a layoff. In fact we were told that everything was all right (altho we could see the signs). I met alot of VERY good people there that should never have been treated that way. But I have to also say, I believe this was a blessing in disguise. I now work for a wonderful worldwide company that is not a dot com! | |
|
| I know about not being treated well having worked for a Dot Com Usually have 20 somethings as VPs and they have no more business running the company than a child does.
My company continues to lay off, so I am quite watchful, it could happen to anyone now.
Glad you already got something else already, not everyone has.....
Reminds me of the early 90s downsizing...except then I wasn't in tech.. |
