Hi I'm currently MCSE in NT4 and CCA, working on upgrading to MCSE 2000. But after that would like to become more of a project manager. What does everyone think of the CompTIA projoct management exam. Do you think it would be of any use? Has anyone do it? Is it easy/hard? Or do you know of any other PM exams that would be of more use?

Thanks

For information on Project Management(PM), try the biggest professional PM professional and certification organization:

Project Management Institute (PMIŽ) at http://www.pmi.org/about/

PMI is a non-profit which has certified professionals in various Project Management areas since 1969. In the IT shop where I work, we place a premium on PMP (Project Management Professionals) with an IT specialty.

There are several other similar organizations, but PMI gives the "biggest bang" for your certification time and money -- hope this helps.

I agree. Where I work the Gartner Group exam (now Comptia) is considered pretty bogus, bu the PMP cert is revered. I have taken a couple of classes already in this area from ESI International and it is excellent. This company also offers a Master Certificate in Project Management from George Wahington University if you take 7 of their classes in 3 years. They also have PMP study materials, and you also need to memorize the PMBOK. Most folks with just a PMP start at 75K+ depending on other certs, etc. There is a tremendous need considering most IT Projects are overbudget or fail (>75%)

Hi all,

I used to work for Unisys in the UK and I knew a couple of people who were working on the first level of the PMI project management qualification (sorry, I'm not sure of the right terminology).

If memory serves me right, they attended a number of courses with mini-tests at the end and then had to take an exam (or possibly multiple exams) with several essays to write in a fairly short time period.

I was quite interested in the scheme from the limited amount I learned about it at the time. The only thing that I didn't like the sound of was that one friend, after his first written exam, told me that a number of people in the exam were quite blatantly cheating. He felt rather disillusioned after that.

Still, I expect the qualification is well-respected.

I'd be very interested to hear comments from any one who has been through this process, and in particular from people who have progressed from MCSE/MCSD level to project management - and beyond! Do share your experiences with the rest of us.
