I am currently working towards my CCNP and CCIE. If I maintain my schedule, I will be CCNP in August. As well, I would have taken the written portion of the CCIE exam by September. I am a senior at Georgia Tech (majoring in Computer Engineering) and a student at Chubb Institute (majoring in Network Engineering). I would like to earn at least an 80K salary in the next 2-4 years. Is it possible, and if so...how so? (Certification, College, or a combination?)

Anything is possible. However, with 2 years experience? I really really doubt it.The high salaries that CCIE`s command is also due to a hell of a lot of experience.

CCIE with no experience would proably be a negative thing. It would show that you were a very capable student. Not a Internetworking Expert.

It looks like you are really preparing yourself though.Good luck to you.

Fresh wizard. I expect to earn at least that much or more. I am 22 and just graduated this May(BS in CS) and will have my CCNP by the end of the year and CCIE written by February. I am starting at over 50K in a major consulting firm and will look to take the lead as much as possible in a year or two of shadowing more experienced network designers and engineers. If you get with consulting companies the only limit to your increase is how many good project opportunities come up. The company I am working for expects you to be a project manager(albeit not a huge project and you still have 2 layers above you on any engagement) within 3 years of working and those people drive some pretty nice cars and wear some damn nice clothes so I know it is possible.

Thanks for the positive reply, Ramlax. I am definitely acquainted with 'Bog Dogs' all of the time. So I know how possible it is. I make close to what you make now, and I have not even graduated, yet. Even more amazing, I am not putting my networking skills to the test...

The schools director at Chubb has informed that after I graduate, they would like for me to be a consultant for them...[news after my first post]...not a pay cut either..at least I hope. lol

Anyway, thanks for the reality check.

After interviewing for a system test tech position with a company that makes networked systems racks for the hospitality industry, I waited for several days and finally had to call to see why they didn't call. I seemed perfect for the job with my certs and experience. I was told that the position was only budgeted for $13/hr. I was asking for twice that amount. That's for a job that needs an A+, AS or AA and CCNA, MCSE desired. That works out to less than $30K. I saw a sign at the local sub sandwich shop looking for help, they offer 11/hr and the manager makes 13. You probably get free food too. Do you want cheese?

Well, thanks for everyone's comments...especially, the sarcastic ones.
It motivated me to actually go out and find out for myself. Guess what? I did. I am now considered a network engineer (junior level), and I making more money than some people who have been doing networking for years. It is not what you know that gets you in the door, but it is who you know. It is what you know that keeps you...and for all the douters, I guess all I can say for you is keep trying. A negative attitude will produce negative results; or at least, low salary. (OK OFF THE SOAP BOX) Be confident and competent. It pays off dearly...I AM GOING FOR TEN MILLION in TEN YEARS. any doubters..lol

That kind of salary is possible. The question is, are you willing to put in the hours for the job.

I have a friend of mine that works for Accenture as a Network Consultant. He started with Anderson Consulting three years ago and is now with Accenture (same company, basically). Doug's an NT4 MCSE, CNE, CCNP, and a CCIE. He works really hard and is rewarded for it. Last time I talked with him, he was making $100K but was coming up on review time and was hoping for $25K more. Anyway, Doug has 5 years in the business. I asked him if he was happy. He told me how much money he'd saved in the three years he'd been there. I asked him again if he was happy. Doug's response was, "not really." Doug is based in Phoenix, but flies all over the country to meet client needs. He lives out of a suitcase and is never home for more than 2 days out of every 14-20. He said that if he had really thought about it, he wouldn't have let Accenture pay for his CCIE, because he still owes them 2 years.

Doug told me that when he's done with his commitment to Accenture, he's going to get out of the computer business for good. Settle down, get married and have a couple kids.

So, I guess it just depends on what you want from life. If you want the money, grab it by the huevos, and go for it.

Good luck in your quest.
