here in Atlanta? My compnay was bought out by another company 2 month's ago and I have been dilligently hunting for a new position. In 2 months, I have probably sent out 200-300 resumes, and hav erecieved 3 callbacks, which lead to nothing and not one single interview. I live in a relatively large city, but in the Sunday classifieds, there is only a half a page of IT jobs. This is compared to 6 or 7 pages a year ago. I have tried the major sites like monster.com, flipdog, and hot jobs, but still nothing. Does anyone have any insight?

TIA

Using if u posted up on the MOnster.com, Hotjob, dice, or ComputerJobs.com. With experience and good certification. U will get a lot of call back.

Are u willing to travel?

The market is bad, many people got laid off.

Good luck on the hunting

I am using all of the one's you listed and more. I am single and willing to travel, in fact, I like traveling. But I still get no replies.

I think the job market's not as good as it was a year ago, but not nearly as bad as the media would have you believe. When I was job hunting I found that companies were much more responsive to phone calls then emails. I guess emails are easier to ignore.

You know, that's the only region I've been getting calls from? Except for one in Chicago, but it was for three months. Too long to maintain two households; too short to relocate... Nor was I qualified at all, they just wanted someone with automotive experience, I guess.

Sacramento is DEAD. There's not even turnover. Even the recruiters are all looking for new jobs. The Bay Area is slow, but there's turnover happening -- no new jobs, but stuff opening up some as people shuffle around.

Not necessarily bleak here, but the market has slowed a bit.

Dallas is Dead, unless you have 6 or more years experienced with ccnp. I have over a year experienced and passed the ccie written last week, no interviews yet. When there's a job opening up there's 30 application with people over 8 years of experienced waiting. Of course I'll be sitting in the dark because of lack of experienced. Man, I was thinking about transitioning to custodian. At that point I don't have to worry about people fighting for my job and I will never be laid off. Every company needs their toilet cleaned.

The drop in IT jobs available is amazing. I see a few 11/hr helpdesk jobs with hundreds of applicants, some with MCSE, CCNA-P, guys with 5 years or more experience.....

There are quite a few Oracle developer gigs around and there is always something for a seriously talented code wonk. But just knowing Unix or NT is not enough anymore. I see some turnover at the top in IT, the director or senior IT level. But for the folks at the bottom or in the middle, this IS the Great Depression of the new information age. I hope this passes pretty soon or I'll be competing for the toilet cleaning job.

Again DC/MD/VA alive and well.

I'll certainly want to be a ccie
(custodian certified industrial expert). Once I'm a ccie I won't have to worry about people fighting for my toilet job.

Around December the job market was awesome. I keep track mostly through computerjobs.com.
The top places for IT jobs are Texas (Dallas and Houston mostly) New York, Silicon Valley and Atlanta. I'm in Dallas and in December there were around 10,000 job postings at computerjobs.com, but since then it's been fluctuating between 1,500 and 3,000. That is a huge drop! Take in note, this is all after the election. I have been hunting for a new job in Dallas for months now and yes it is dead. It's dead everywhere. Microsoft is actually hiring right now, so I'm looking into that. They're hiring alot of people for a Win XP support project, which starts in August. The pay is between 28 - 32/hr, depending on experience and certs. Check out computerjobs.com, it'll give you the best look of the market in major tech areas, like Atlanta where you are.

Is Microsoft hiring through Volt? Please let me know where I can go to apply. Thanks!

Microsoft is hiring through this company:

Compcontech
1320 Greenway Dr
Irving, TX 75038-2550
972 751-0438

I saw it posted at computerjobs.com

Since we both live in Dallas, we should tell each other about jobs we might find that would suit each other, if we come upon them.

That'll work. I say we forego the idea.

WOW, I have been told several times to move to Atlanta and that is where everything is happening!

I guess not! You have a good amount of certs and you cant hit a job? That is messed up!

Well I would keep hunting! Have you tried:

headhunter.net
computerjobs.com

They always have something in Atlanta.

I am only one state away! Let me know how it goes!

Tried computerjobs.com, most jobs required 3 years of industry experienced. Sometimes I try to figured out why do they need that amount of experienced when its not relevant to the job responsibilities.
techdaemon

2001-07-16, 2:17 pm

Ya, they all say that you need all this experience, but I'd just send a good resume and make sure to send it to the recruiters personal address, not through computerjobs or monster. Use resume wizard. I just discovered it yesterday and it makes an awesome resume and it's free. You can find it at davecentral.

That's what I've been doing. I usually send all resumes to their personal email address instead of the general. Looks like its mostly bullsh*t with their posting of avaliability positions.

Was lurking thru the Usenet (I even post on occasion) to a local NG.

Atlanta's IT market right now is in a slump as it is elsewhere, this thread is similar to what we find here in Cert21

thread in atl.general:

Off-topic, but how many here use the Usenet anymore instead of website message boards like this one?
Randy

2001-07-20, 2:52 pm

I use both.
techdaemon

Usenet is better when you want to be anonymous, but I personally have fallen for these message boards, because of the extremely rapid response and help... seems like more of little community..

Just for what ifs I checked into ITCareers.com and set it for Phoenix. Nice service, updates and Phoenix looks pretty hot. Its growing like mad snakes out there.

It's not looking good here in Las Vegas. A friend of mine advertised for a mobile service tech and got hundreds of applicants. Most with several years experience and a lot with MCSE and other high level certs.

ever thought about relocating to australia?
hehe probably not im guessing.........

there are plenty of jobs here though. a friend of mine with ccna and 1 nt mcp got a job in the heart of sydney as a network something (im into prog. so i forget) making about $50k per year. His only experience is working for a call centre for 6 months and he is 19..........

There are so many ASP,VB, XML jobs here!! Paying anywhere up to $80/h for lots of knowledge and basic experience.

CCNP's and such would be able to get employment here soooooooo easy!!

anyway, theres a bit of market info from aust. enjoy )))))))

Finally, after 2 months of unemployment, I have an interview. Even though I have to drive 4 hours for it, it'll be worth it. Looks very promising. Anybody heard of mcleod usa? They need 5 nocc guys in the heart of The Woodlands, TX, which is north of houston. If anybody here willing to relocate, email me.

DC is very much alive and well, try washington post on sundays, or you can check them out on the web and look at the jobs. Global One and AOL is looking for network engineers.

good luck

Hey Freddy!

I thought it would be mega fat in Vegas? Man with all those casinos and resorts. Maybe for inhouse IT? I thought all the slots and various gaming was networked, so they could see what was hitting. Crazy.
