| I have a dilemma with my current company. My company does consulting, engineering services, storage and contracts people out. I’m in the contract service, they placed me into a position that will last for 3-4 months, this position is way below my skill set and there is no opportunity to move around within this position. They know it’s below my skill set and I told them this would be like taking three steps backwards from what I was working on previous. Again it’s only for 3-4months. I have been talking to a recruiter from another company for a position that is what I am looking for. The hands on experience will really be nice and I would probably get a 15-20% salary increase. I am currently enrolled in school for one class. With my current position the manager is so laid back I will be able to take 3-4classes in addition to working 40hrs. I will not be able to do this with the other company. So the dilemma is; Should I stay, get about 5% hands-on experience, take 3-4 classes at night (only one semesters worth) and I will be able to study during the day? OR Should I take the new opportunity with 90% hands-on work, get a possible 15-20% salary increase and only be able to take one class per semster?? | |

| I guess itr depends on what your priorities are right now. Do you need to get your classes down as fast as possible? If so, you may want to stay where you are. Consulting does allow one to get a good bit of experience and since the current job is just a few months long it may be worth it to stay. If you just want the experience and aren't as concerned about the classes then it might pay you better to just leave, especially if you know your boss isn't going to give you the sort of assignments that you think will help your career. | |

| I'm not trying to bust out of school anytime soon b/c I am just starting school. I can definitely stay at this current job until the semester is over (December) and take 3classes while working the job but I'm pretty bitter about this assignment. I’m not utilizing my skills at all. They provide no training at this new position, the guy before me landed another job so basically I get trained yesterday and today and that’s it. I am the only one in the building doing this kind of mainframe support so I have only one other person to turn to with questions. I’m thinking about asking for some compensation? I am due for a raise in Nov. Then again I could avoid all this stress and take a position as a network technician utilizing my all three of my certs. Any feedback is welcome. | |

| Well, if I were you, I'd probably take the other position. I hate mainframes anyway. | |

| If I were you, I would jump on the new position, not for the money, but for the experience. I am right up the road in Charlotte, and I can tell you, IT jobs are getting harder to come by. You will still be able to attend some classes, and you will also be satisfied with the position, unlike the current job you seem unhappy with. The money will be better, I would still focus on the experience that you will gain at this new job. It will look better on your resume. | |
