I'm considering starting a technology consulting business and am not sure where to start, or if I should even do this yet. First of all, I'm not sure how much knowledge and experience I should gain before getting into consulting. I've had my first IT job for around 10 months as the sole IT employee of a small company (part time), so I've been able to do a wide range of tasks. I'd like to specialize in my main interests: internetworks, Unix and security which I think would be complementery to each other. My knowledge level in each of these areas is fairly solid, but I'm by no means an expert in any of them. The company I currently work for is in the insurance industry, so I'm thinking that I could leverage this experience to give me an edge with other companies in this industry. Does anyone have any pointers on where to start, like certain book(s) or article(s) to take a look at? I appreciate any responses.

ccieToBe,

One place you can start in the alt.computer.consultants newsgroup. Some the books may want to review on computer consulting are:

Getting Started in Computer Consulting by Peter Meyer

From Serf to Surfer: Becoming a Network Consultant by Matthew Strebe

Answers for Computer Contractors
The Computer Consultant's Workbook
The Computer Consultant's Guide : Real-Life Strategies for Building a Successful Consulting Career
all by Janet Ruhl

Hope that helps,

From what I see, it is a local company, but he is using his certifications as selling power to prove that he is capable. This may be no more than a few guys who pitched in together and had the knowledge to get things done when others couldn't. I didn't think it a wise idea to mail them to see how they were doing financially but if the will is there, and you have the knowledge, it is certainly possible. I know a number of individual consusltants here in Baton Rouge, and they do quite well (but they know their stuff!).

Thanks for the list of books Watchdog, I'll take a look at them. From Serf to Surfer looks like a good one, so I'll at least read that.

Randy, "Beep-a-Geek" looks like an interesting site to get some ideas from. I don't think they get much web design business though
