Hey, Ok here goes! I dropped out of my university about a year ago (i was a senior).I didn't know what to do! Ok, so i heard alot about MCSE and the IT field, so i enrolled in a few courses. Now, i'm worried that i'm not going to get a job b/c of not having a BA or BS degree. My major in college wasn't anything close to computers (sports medicine). What should i do? My instructor told me after i passed a few test i'd get a job that they would place me in, well, getting to the point, is this possible or am i doomed?

Please Help!

Your not doomed, you may not get a job right off the bat making 35k b/c you have no experience. Taking some computer classes at the University would help out. Watch out though, some of the classes you take(computer engineering) may be the same thing as studying for an MSCE only a lot more work and $$. I would try to intern while in school and taking classes related to the field. If not, get certified with a varity of diff certs, not just MCSE but maybe a CNA, A+, CCNA. Once again even w/ a MCSE and no job experience you may only be worth 30k.

College would have been helpful, regardless of the degree. Sure an IT/MIS degree in the IT field would probably be better, but a degree at least will show an ability to set a long-term goal and complete and indicate an ability to learn. I would certainly consider finishing a BA or BS in something in the future.

I have a BA in English and a couple Associate degrees in IT, but the communication skills I learned in college apply well in IT (documentation, tech writing, etc.). I also know of an IT project manager that has a degree in Psychology and a MBA, and she was chosen for project management because she has to prepare, train, and assist users when the techies are implementing some new IT systems. Her employers felt she would be in a good position to guage users feelings about the changes, communicate with the customers, etc..

As for MCSE and no experience. No experience means you will likely start like everyone else, unless you really luck out. It's not necessarily a bad place, though. It will give you a chance to learn which areas you like most about IT, and after a couple years experience you'll be in a better position to move up in the career.

I wouldn't pay the big bucks to go to school for certs. Don't get deep in debt. If nothing else, study for some of the entry-level certs, get an entry-level IT position, maybe your employer will pay for some of the certs or schooling.

Be realistic! Do u believe them? Pass few cert and get a jobs... NOt anymore!

Get your B.S/B.A? U will need it in the long term career goal.

Also, U need to love what u do? DOn't let other people talk u into it, specially those people in the training center(they need business, don't care much of what u will be).

Think Deep!

OK I got one for ya. I went through a training center for my MCSE and the training center gave us all hiring letters for employment after I finished the track. When I got my MCSE I put out tons of resumes and all I got so far is "sorry we do not have a position avalable at this time". I have a job at the training center and I started Monday but it is in Corp. Sales. That is totally not what I wanted to do but it is alot of money. So what do you do? Great job but not in the field I wanted. I sale complete networks to companies: workstation, servers, the complete package and go set it up and we provide helpdesk and support for it. So I'm in a kinda ruff position is this networking experance or not? If I want to be in this field should I keep looking for a IT job with alot lower pay or stick it out?(HELP, HELP, SOMEONE HELP.)My point to you is that you do not need a training center to get your certs you can get them on your own. But those places are out to make money period. They don't care about you or your future so you will have to make it happen for your self. I have found out that alot of companies just Laugh at your resume if you just have a MCSE and no experiance in the field. I found out the hard way, you need to get your degree BS in something. The route I'm going is a place online it's NOT a diploma mill and I'll have my BS in information systems in about 1 1/2 - 2 yrs. with my transfers. A 4 year degree is going to be the same price I paid for my MCSE training. So if I were you that is the route I would go( That degree will never expire!!! )and after that find that job and let them pay for all the certs you ever want. Good luck to you hope it helps.

****Anyone got any advice for me with my situation I sure would like some feed back on this.****

Thanks

With your new job, you say you'll setup the networks? Is this physical, hands-on work? Isn't that what a MCSE does? That counts as experience. How about you make the big bucks now and use it to pay for some IT classes for me
OK I'm just kiddin...I would definitely finish school and stick with that job for a little bit. Maybe you can transfer departments to a more technical department later on. Try to stick it out for 6months, you can learn what equip is compatible with others and how a network is set up. Why a this frame type is not compatible with this software. Also remember that a lot of the big companies are laying off or on hiring freezes, so in 6months-1yr(not sure how long) they may be hiring again.
I hope this helps you out.
