Author Getting a dtatbase job. Will the Oracle DBA do it?

Just wanted to know if anyone had any idea how to get into the Oracle field. Preparing to run 8i on my linux set up. Will getting a DBA get me into a database job or will I just end up sending resumes and hearing "we're looking for experience" Just wanted to know if anyone had any ideas out there.
