| Hi everyone, I used to visit these boards a lot when I was studying for my A+. I slacked off a bit (well I was planning my wedding all summer) and I want to get refocused. I am currently a call coordinator. I take the problem down and asign to a tech to fix, it is my companiess software. Our software is based off unix. I think I would like to learn that. Are there any certs I can study or should I continue with network+? | |

I think Network+ would be a good next step. You need a basic understanding of networking concepts, especially TCP/IP before you can get into any more then the basics of Unix. Most major commercial Unix vendors offer certifications of some kind. If you're dealing with Solaris or BSD Unix you can download a copy for free and install it on a PC. Otherwise you're probably stuck with proprietary and expensive hardware.

| Thank you ccie. Our company uses HP-UX? I didn't realize there were differences. | |

| Once you learn one Unix variant (on the console), it's easy to transition to the others. AFAIK HP-UX is only available on HP hardware which is VERY expensive. Unless you have a lot of cash your best bet would probably be to see if your company has some hardware they'd let you practice on and to use some other Unix variant on your home lab.
I've never dealt with HP-UX so I can't tell you what variant which runs on PC hardware is closest. I suggest making a post on the Linux/Unix board to see if anyone there has experience with HP-UX.

| HP-UX only runs on PA-RISC chips made by HP. They are supposed to be developing a port for Intel, but I wouldn't hold my breath. It is a lot like Solaris. |
