| Just wanted to offer words of encouragement to anyone who has found themselves at the wrong end of the axe lately. I was severanced Aug. 24 but began a new (and much better job) on Sept. 24. Now I get to "double dip" with my severance pay for a few more weeks and my new job gave me a substantial increase in salary and benefits!
The market is tight, but it's not impossible. Keep working hard and looking harder!
Best of luck to everyone.

My biggest fear was I left the retail sector a year and a half ago when I got a job at a help desk. After 9 months, the help desk desolved and I was promoted to business analyst. 8 months later, they cut me. I have A+ and MCP, but I was really concerned because I didn't have an IT degree (my bachelors is in Music).
But everything seems to have worked out so far. My new job is implementation, very heavy database and project management, and gave me a serious raise. I plan on using the tuition reimbursement to either pursue an MBA or possibly an IT degree now. If I go MBA, I plan on at least getting a DBA certificate (30 credit hours).
Of the approx. 9 who got layed off from our office, I'm the first to get a job. One other person has since found something in project management. My advice is to stay focused, and like my old professor used to say about fear and self-doubt, "you have to cage the scorpions in your mind."
Best of luck to all. I can't speak highly enough about the folks in the forum, their support and their help.

| Ed,
First of all well done to you, sounds like your career is progressing really well and you've obviously worked hard!
I noticed you mentioned that you had a degree in music. My bachelors was in Zoology, and I was fortunate to get onto a trainee position in my first job and have stayed in IT ever since!
What do others think about IT degrees, I wonder? For those of you who took a computing subject as their first degree, do you feel that you have advanced your career more rapidly than you might have done otherwise? And are there any out there who have obtained an IT degree later on?
