| I have been in IT Implemation for over 6 years. I see more women coming on board but they end up paper pushers. This is sad to see. I am a Field Engineer, a mother of a 5 years old, a wife, a maid, a taxi driver, and student. Life is quite full and YES I love every minute of it.
But it is hard! I am the only Field Engineer in 6 states that is female. I have receive a raise every year I have been with the company but no promotions. The "guys" say they will not follow me cause I am too demanding. Or at least that is what the Mangaer told me. The person who got the promo, was laid back, been here less than a year, likes tell jokes with the guys....the good old boy attitude. It sucks. But I can always choose anothe career.
Naw, not really. I love being a tech way too much. I get my rewards from the clients and end-users.

| Hi,
Nice to meet another IT lady here
Beeing a specialist and becoming a team leader or manager are completely different things. You should take the mangers feedback to heart - I think it's great he (I guess) gave it to you.
I made the experience that proving social skills is the best way being accepted as team leader.
I am IT manager with 4 tech guys but I'm definitely not a specialist in every field we need to cover (telco, networking, server management, security, internet, ...) - I only need to understand a problem and need to know what or who can fix it. OK - maybe this is a little understatement, but my techs "love" it to explain a problem to me - I'm listening carefully and discuss all technical questions in an equitable and objective manner with the team. Maybe I know a solution and could simply instruct it, but I prefer to obtain a consens about a remedy. If there is a discordance (sometime quite emotional) I need to "balance" and smooth the positions.
Being responsible for a group means that you (as group) are only as good as the weakest link in your group - there is no 100 % !! Delegating means that someone else will probable do the job in a different way you would do it, maybe it takes a little (or some more) longer, maybe the solution isn't perfect .. so you need to relax and accept also 70 % if they are suitable to the problem. Accept mistakes (I call it learning curve) as long as they are openly discussed that everybody can learn from them.
I never realized that telling jokes is a good old boy attitude I love to laugh with my techs - also about "male" jokes ...
Maybe you are a bit "overambitious" in proving how perfect you do your job as a woman. Prove to be a good team player, ask and discuss your problems with your colleagues. Always share your knowledge and motivate your team to do so.
I'm sure you will get your promotion soon!
Best of luck! | |

| they say you are "too demanding..."
I guess that's one of the differences between male and female Managers.
just my 2 cents .., dont mean to offend anyone by saying this
