Hello friends !!!!

I used to work in IT about 2 years ago as an Oracle back end engineer , in a UNIX platform. Because of some financial constraints , I want to go back to full time work again . I am currently studying for the OCP - DBA track , to get certified in that area and am also planning on getting a UNIX SYSTEMS ADMIN certification. Apart from this , I am also considering MCSE , Windows Systems Admin.

Recently , a friend told me that I should not just get into Database & OS Admin , but also consider getting educated in Networking , and Web Administration . Would having a strong Oracle & UNIX background , make Web Server Administration ideal for me ? I am familiar with JAVA , JavaScript , CGI , Perl , and UNIX shell scripts.

Should I consider studying Networking for UNIX servers ? What would you suggest ? Are there alternate career paths (within IT) that I could consider with my background ?

Sorry for rambling on - it would be a tremendous help for me to get some good feedback from all you guys and girls.
I feel completely overwhelmed , trying to think this out on my own.

Thanx a tonne.

I agree depend on your interest.

I don't is your friend in the field or not.

However, Database is the key and the center of all Information Systems. DB job is high demand and not everybody got experience and education. Oracle DBA is one of the best certification out there.

You will never get laid off on DBA job unless it is very very very bad.

You can be DB engineer to implement, design, and work with DB security on both physcial and online.

Wow Homemaker! With all that experience and a Certification, seems like you won't have any problems getting a job. Best of luck to you.

I do not have talent for databases
As a matter a fact
I hate even access
work with it because
I have to

So to be able to work on Oracle for example
Its a Special Talent
other certifications are not a must but
specializing on that one could make wonders for your carreer I guess you left the Job because of marriage or matternity?

In any case welcome back to the IT world

Networking is very good and lucrative but it would be very boring to u if the interest is not there.

Develop an interest for networking then I ll advise u to go for it.

It's not easy to just "jump into" networking (you'd have to start with basic hardware first, i.e., A+). Not impossible to do, but since you have such a strong background in database and Unix already, your energy might be best spent bringing those skills up to date. From the job postings I have seen, Unix, DBA and Java are MORE in demand than networking. If you are planning a full-time return to the job market, your best bet would be to increase your knowledge of java, etc., as it relates to database technology.
