How many women are there actually in these forums???
|
|
|
| Hey guys:
Sometimes it's hard to tell from the user names that are not gender specific.
I'm just curious to know how many women we have in the ExamNotes forums.

| Yes no men!
Just kidding! I think all opinions are welcomed.
Oh by the way yes I am female and I in IT for 5 years in tech support, am now technical engineering support. Not that it makes a difference, other than my paycheck is a little larger. Still trying to break into Networking.

| Awwwww...I feel welcomed now:-) | |
|
| Hey Bobby:
You should know by now that your opinions are always welcomed!
I was just curious to know how many people were actually female, because its fairly obvious that Galaxy Gal, myself and Jaslie are girls by our usernames. Some user names however are not gender specific.

| Hello, I am glad to hear there are women in the IT field. I myself am a women and a newbie to this field so far I have my CNA and currently working on my Net+. | |
|
| Hey -
I am a woman, and I am currently A+, Net+, i-net+ (w/CIW Assoc. by default; I sent in my inet scores but didn't get the cert yet) and will be working toward CCNA in the VERY near future (to that end I just got the brainbench Cisco Network Support cert today after about 5 tries - yay!)
My username is not gender-specific but it is a combo of my last name & my fave rock & roll band, NRBQ - they RULE!!

| |
|
| Hi I am also a newbie woman and working towards CCNA- I am recently A+ and currently studying for Network+...
I always look forward to woman forums and will frequent often.
|
| You guessed it ... I'm a woman-wannabe-internet-programmer. I've just completed the Master CIW Designer tracks and have enrolled for four courses of the Master CIW Enterprise Developer track next year. I would love to make contact with other women attempting the CIW tracks out there.
PS. I'm an Editor with very little IT experience - are there other non-IT people attempting the CIW tracks?
|
| Yes, I am women hear me roar! I am new to IT, but have been interested in it for several years, my better half finally encouraged me to pursue a IT Carreer. I go to school full time for Computer Science and I'm working now towards my MCSE 2000 ( not doiong this from my school, decided to do this on my own since the school is not yet offering 2000, go figure?) I am enrolled in the Spring for Networking 1 which is Cisco and plan on getting certified in that too.

|
| Me too. Hi GalaxyGal!
Anykey, MCSE, MCP-I | |
|
| Well, count me in too! I am a new MCSE, female, and this is a career change for me. I'm in the process of updating my resume and getting ready to send it out. I have been home for a few years raising my children and will now venture back out into the workplace. I used my time off to go to school at a local training center and do a lot of studying!!! Any suggestions/tips would certainly be welcomed! | |
|
| Count me in as one of the females. I'm an IT Director and have been in this field around 20 years. I've been putting off certification, but finally decided to go for it. One more on Friday and I hopefully will be a MCSE. | |
|
| Erui:
Best of luck to you on Friday. Keep us posted!!!

| Thanks, I will. Now, back to studying! And, this is a great forum, BTW! | |
|
| Another one here!!
Been in IT for about 10 years, firstly operations, then support. Now do 2/3rd level support and Exchange admin.
Don't know why I wanted to do the MCSE. I just did it really. The thing I found most difficult was,for the exam, knowing the "Microsoft Way" of doing things, against the way you tend to do stuff in the real world. Loads more work studying than I expected though, so props to everyone doing these exams. I really got alot of help from everyone here, so thanks once again.
| |
|
| Yippee, I passed today, so I now get to add a sig. line!

| Thanks so much. I really happy that I finished now, so I can enjoy the holidays. | |
|
| I am also a newbie woman, I got my A+ certification in Nov. and I have taken 70-210 and 70-215 for my MCSE, I am currently studying my butt off for the 70-216 and CNA. I am curious as to how difficult is was for all of you women in the IT field to get your foot in the door?
Many thanks for starting up this forum!

| hey there all!
I'm a newbie and have nothing yet to add to my signiture line =] Other than a very simple site about who I am!
I have completed the MCP NT 4 classes but I start my Windows 2000 classes January 29! So I don't plan to take certs for the NT 4.0. I am currently working on my I-Net+ exam I completed the CIW Foundations Series and I have failed now once by one pt! ON BOTH EXAMS UGH!=[ So almost there I guess!
After that I start A+ classes in March and somewhere in there I need to take my MOUS certification in Access. UGH! So I have alot on my plate! Looking forward to spending some time with other ladies in the field Good Luck to you all =]

Good to see all you ladies are here.

| Hi All!
I too am a woman in the IT field. I'm a LAN Administrator working for state government for 6 years. I'm a CNA, Network+ certified, and one exam away from completing my CNE. Oracle DBA is next although I just might change my mind and get into Cisco.
Thank you for creating this forum and providing a much needed outlet for women in IT to share their unique problems and concerns.

| Hi all, I'm a very new member, just signed up today, I,m trying to get in the IT field, I did my A+ core exam a few days ago and failed by 94 points, right now I'm so disappointed, If anyone has any tips, advice anything I would really appreciate it.
Chao! | |
|
| Ladysue,
Though I am not studying your track, I am studying the Cisco track, I can give you this advice.......stick in there, get mad, get determined and get deeper into those studys. You can do it, don't give up. If there are area's you feel weak in, go over it agian and agian until it sinks in. Once you are feeling more comfortable with the concepts, get out there and take that test agian. Sounds like you just weren't as ready as you thought. It is really hard to gauge when you are really ready to sit for a test and most of the time I over study, but I figure it is better to over study then to understudy and not really have a deep understanding of the concepts. Get out there and do it, you can do it......good luck and let us know how you are progressing....
Michelle | |
|
| Ladysue, don't give up. I agree with Cryptogirl. Just get mad. I actually failed my A+ the first time I took it. It's the only one I failed because I got mad and got even. I passed it, my MCSE, my CCNA, and now my CCNP. If I can do it anyone can. So remember, get mad and just do it.
Never give up. Never surrender.
|
| Hi Cryptogirl,
Thank you for the advice, I'm going to do exactly that, because I'm already mad so I'm going to study harder and get even, you lift my spirits, the next time I'm definately going to pass it.Thanks again, and I'll keep you posted.
Chao!

| Thank you hershey, I'm definately not giving up,this is something I really want to do,because after I do the A+ I'll be doing Network+,MCSE,and Cisco, so I'm taking it one step at a time. Thanks again for the advice.
Congratulation to you on all of your accomplishments, that's very good. I'll keep you informed when I take my exam agin.

| I've been hanging around the A+ and N+ boards for quite a while (I got my A+ over a year ago and was starting to study for N+) but just started reading this forum. I've been in the IT department at my company for 18 years and have done Help Desk and then PC support for the past 6 or so. I just got a promotion yesterday to Computer Operations Supervisor and I'm scared to death! Three of the bosses in the department approached ME when the opening came up, so it's very flattering that they think so highly of me and have such confidence in me, and they're going to send me to a "first time supervisor" class, but still......I'm terrified. OK....deep breath.....breathe....it will be OK.....Thanks for listening! | |
|
| I am a woman, 27 years old, and have just begun the long road to Certificationville. I am sure it won't be easy, but I am willing to work hard at what I believe in, and what I enjoy doing. | |
|
| I have been in the IT field about 6 years now. Being an older woman has its challenges in this field but I seem to be doing better then some of the men in my company. I still have some of those moments, though. I have worked hard for where I am today and won't let anything stop me. My first goal was going back to school, my second was achieving my first certification. I will be graduating May 2 , with my second degree in Internet Technology. I am now an MCSE NT 4.0 as of Jan. 23 and will achieve my Win2K cert by the end of the year. But the best thing of all is that I am a grandmother of a wonderful 3 year old who will not have to worry about gender problems for what ever she wants to do. She already loves computers. | |
|
| Another woman here - looks like quite a few actually - coming here reminds me that I am not alone when I sit in a class full of males ; ) | |
|
| Hi ladies
I'm carline, MCP x3, going for 70-240, and I'm a woman, so I guess I'm in, right?
Carline | |
|
| I would be the new girl on the block. | |
|
| Hi all,
I feel a bit left out - all you guys are from Canada or America, I'm a gatecrasher from Edinburgh, Scotland. Mind you it's good to know the A+, Network+, etc is accepted worldwide - who knows maybe one day I will have an adventure of a lifetime!
|
| Yep I too am a woman in the IT field -- nice to see there are so many here -- seems you don't run into too many in the field.
I am currently trying to finish my MCSE and may take A+ just because I am not really stron gin the hardware department -- software support is more along my talents.
Everyone keep your head up and show the boys that we are just as good as they are (and most times better

| Hello everyone,
I suppose I am the "old" one in the crowd. I have been in IT for 20 years!!
|
| Wow!
20 years in IT.
What kind of computers were you using 20 years ago?
|
| Hmmm . . . the PC was invented in 1981, right? | |
|
| I've been looking at the forum for a couple of weeks now and thought I would add my name to the growing list of IT women.
I took my A+ DOS/Win exam this morning and passed so I am now A+ qualified as I passed the Core last week.
All this is totally new to me as I am a nurse for the past 20 years, but fancied a career change. I first looked inside a PC last September on a beginners PC assembly course. It has all snowballed from there - I got the bug!
Now going to look what jobs are around for A+ qualification.
Regards to everyone.

| Hi, I'm a new lady tech (A+ on March 5, 2001), but not so new to the IT field. I was wondering if I can get a little advice. I held a Computer Operator position with my company for three years. My company is downsizing this location so I will be getting layed off on April 9th. To me my position was more of a System Support position because I was responsible for troubleshooting, repairing and upgrading PC's and printers and helping the end users as well as helping our clients via telephone in troubleshooting their teleprinters (which is a remote printer that is used to receive reports from our system). I was also responsible for connecting the equipment to the network. My question is in what area of the field do you think I should be able find work? Also where would you suggest I tried to get certified in next? Sorry so long, but thanks in advance. | |
|
| If you deal with particular clients on a regular basis, you might check with them and see if they have any Help Desk positions open. Since they already know you, it might be a good 'in'. | |
|
| Thanks, that thought crossed my mind but most of our clients are not local and I really don't want to relocate. | |
|
| Ok, the old broad again....
When I started (20 years ago), I worked on a DEC PDP11-44 AND we used punched cards!!! We have really come a long way, haven't we.
|
| Ah, an old-time hacker, hey? Those PDP's were famous at one time. Actually, at the COBOL shop where I work, there are all too many references to "parm cards" and 80 coulmns for us to be able to forget the good ole punched cards! I'm just a whipper snapper who started off on DOS myself! | |
|
| Started out in IT about 6 or 7 years ago. Changed careers from Social Work believe it or not. Learned it all on my own (from jobs etc). Started out at local ISP (tech support), then to major computer company (tech support). Working for big financial company now (tech support) and they are paying for certs. Taking A+ on Monday\
tues and then on to N+ and CNA soon.
|
| i am also a woman and have been in the IT industry for just 2 years. i am a network administrator and really enjoy my work. it's mostly men around here and don't know why more women don't come into the field. i'm studying hard for my ccnp and will have it before october.

| Hello Ladies,
Count me in. I have been in IT for almost 4 years. Technology is so interesting that my head is spinning. It was hard to focus at one time because I wanted to do everything. Reading this forum everyday and watching so many people become CCNP has sparked my interest and has challenged me. I am in it until I get that CCIE.
Anyone know what the count is up to now?
|
| I'm new here. Thank heavens I'm not alone! Do any of you know if the new objectives for the A+ exam (2001) have been posted anywhere?
Thanks | |

| You can find the new objectives at comptia.org under certifications. | |

| I passed the A+ last thursday! It was my birthday too so that was a nice added bonus. I did alot of studying of the exam notes from here and alot of other sites, my job paid for one of those intensive study classes for a week and then I took every practice test I could find on the web. I didnt ace it by any means but I passed with a good score. woo hoo Next stop N+ at the end of the April | |

| Hello, all! I am new to this forum and a woman! I plan on going into CIS this fall when I first attend college, and I already have a few of my MOUS certifications heading for my Master. Eventually, I'd like to get into A+ or something similar, but for now, I'm sticking with programming and software... Visual Basic being the language I'm most proficient in. | |
|
| Yuk! I've been trying to get out of programming for quite some time! Anyway, best of luck to you. | |

Good luck with the career change though.

| I work now in shared web server support doing troubleshooting primarily on NT and Windows webservers that run Cold Fusion and ASP. It seemed daunting to get that first IT job.
I have been in the IT field about 3 years now. I studied political science and German. I had either wanted to teach college (vocational school and or work in the foreign service) I have been using the Internet for over 7 years.
So here I am seeking more webdesign skills, particularly with databases, XML and so on.
My educational background is listed here.

| How much experience do you need in Networking, Software or Hardware NOT to be considered new to the field. I was the lead Novell network admin at my company after a 6 month internship, but that was just a windfall, the full time admin quite….haha. Guess you could say I am lucky. I have been doing this for about 2 and 1/2 years if you count my internship. | |

| I am here also. I completed the cisco academy courses and have taken the CCNA test and the CCDA test. I messed up and took them on the same day. I passed the CCDA and failed the CCNA. Unbelievable! Anyway
I will be taking the CCNA tomorrow.
I have always been in a technical field (Electronics Eng. Technology) but decided to switch into the IT field. I am having terrible luck getting my foot in the door, getting a job so to speak.
I am glad this forum is here.

Yes has there been a count ????
Great question

| Hi,
Im happy to see this question on the forums because I was quite curious myself. From your pic Paisleyskye Id guessed you were definatly of the female variety as am I. Im 31 and just starting out so very nervous about my new career yet excited at the prospect of being something other than being a restaurant manager aka a glorified waitress, which I was for years. I have been very lazy in the past because the money was always adequate and the lifestyle suited me, but as I get older I feel as though I should be forging a new path for myself. Does anyone out there think that as old as I am and relitavly inexperienced (but very determined) that I may have left it too late? I am taking my A+ core soon and hope to have the OS soon after, after that I would like to go for my MCSE, but I feel that I should eventually specialise. I am not totally informed on the choices that I have after that and would appriciate some advice, or a push in the right direction.I am more the practical logical type and dont think that programming is for me - I just want to get onto a path that will be successful and varied, and there seems to be so much to choose from - Any Ideas?.
For anyone that replies to this thank you in advance. These forums have really opened my eyes to the types of people I might meet in my field and I am suprised and happy to find you - Oh god Im gushing! better go

| Hi Suki,
Good heavens, "as old as you are"? I was 36 when I decided to get into this field and started at ground zero with no experience at all!
I know have a great job with an excellent wage and benefits. I lucked out I have to admit and got into the company the company through my job placement from school. I don't believe it is that easy for the majority.
As for a specialty, I think, just from what I see in my own region, that the MCSE market may have a glut and you may want to look at another area of the IT world. Cisco is a favorite choice right now and there may be a better chance for you with that. But don't just take my word, check some of the big job sites like Monster on the internet and see what employers are after.
It is a big investment in time and money so you want to choose wisely.
Good luck to you and follow your heart but listen to your head. Don't be discourged from what you want to do, you won't regret it, I never have.
Take care and stay tuned to this site. I have found people are always ready here to offer congratulations and encouragement and that can go a long way!

| Hmm-m-m
I thought I replied to this earlier, but yeah... count me in. Another IT Goddess.
My major field of endeavour for the past 18 years was manufacturing quality assurance with a strong minor in "Hey Amanda, can you please look at my computer?"
Amanda - Hoping to get her A+ next month.

| Well, I'm a woman, over 40, trying to break into IT--and a newbie when it comes to posting on message boards!!
I was in manufacturing for 13 years. It was time for a career change after getting laid
off.
From the looks of things, this looks like a
great place to gain some insight...
Regards,
