| The other day, i recovered a bunch of files off an old Win95 Computer, (yes, win95)
transfered them to my Server, then i copied them on to the Customers Win98 machine.
Now she's complaining, the Files are all read-only and can't do any changes to them.
Now, i have done this a million times, is there something, i missed?
I will see the Customer first thing in the Morning, i hope some of you has the answer.

| Okay, before you copy them from the Win 95 machine, check to see if the read only attribute is applied to the file. You can do this using Windows explorer, right click the file name, and select Properties on the short cut menu. On the General tab, there are attributes such as read only, and Hidden.
Your server may be applying the Read Only attribute to it if the permissions are not set on the server.
What I would do is copy all the files to your server, and when you copy them to a folder on the windows 98 computer, go to the Windows Explorer, open the folder where you copied the files, and select every file you copied. Right click the highlighted file names, and select Properties from the shortcut menu and remove teh check mark from the Read Only attribute check box.
If you are good at a DOS Prompt, go to the DOS Prompt, navigate to the folder containing the files, and enter the command
attrib *.* -r
This will remove the Read only attribute from all the files.

| You can also tell her to remove the Read Only attribute by right click ign the file name and selecting Properties on the shortcut menu.

| Thanks for the replies.
She said, she can't uncheck the read-only Box, it is greyed out.
BTW, that was the first thing i suggested to her over the Phone... | |

| If it is greyed out, then I would definitely use the DOS method.
You can also check teh files during the transfer from win 95 machine.

| Thanks for all the Help, Guys!
I right-clicked all the Files, to properties, General Tab, un-checked the "read-only" Tab,(they were greyed out, but let me un-check anyways)and things worked just fine!
Customers....can't live without them...
can't kill them!
Thanks again!
