Author An office 97 issue

I have installed office 97 SR-2 on Windows 2000 professional and I get an error message in word and excel stating that the document is already open then after clicking on OK the document opens anyway.

Not a major problem but when you word with documents every day it becomes on hell of a pain the the back orifice.

Does anyone know a cure for this?

Thanks in advance.

sounds like you may have a bit of a virus there - what is the exact error message you are getting ?

Thanks for the help but it's a office 97 issue with the registry I believe as there is a registry hack to get spell checker working under windows 2000.

This only happens in Excel and Word it says the file is already open by the user who has just attempted to open the file!

I can't find any mention of this on technet etc and I need to resolve this issue.

Thanks anyway.

I've been getting the same problem on Advanced Server. If you find an answer please post it.

I've seen this and the only solution I found that works is to install Office2000, (which may have been planned by "Bill".)

That was a response that was mentioned a few weeks back but I don't dictate the software policy for my company so I need to find a solution. Even some of the less than politically correct web sites don't appear to have a solution to this, although technet did have the fix for the spell check problem so it must be a known issue.

I just found this http://support.microsoft.com/defaul...;EN-US;q174304. Hopefully it is the answer to our prayers. I have not yet applied it though. So let me know if it works.

Well, the actual artical is Q257643

you can get to this by going straight to http://support.microsoft.com/defaul...;en-us;Q257643

Sexy, my only point is that if you still have a problem, its a lot easier to give help if you tell us what the error message is.

Then again, I'm only a junior member but its something to think about.

Anyway, hope the above article helps out as it does indicate the problem you have and it is the registry fix that you mention

Thanks both for the links. The spell checker in word has been resolved. However, when you open either a word or excel document is says that a copy of the file is already open by you and would you like to open a read only copy. The files are always local and no one else is using the file.

Every windows 2000 machine that I have installed office 97 on comes up with this error even if you are logged in as an administrator.

Hope this helps.

ahh, just re-read your original reply, of course, you have this article so, again, whats the error message you're getting as I have to say we frequently run Office 97 under Win2K with no problems but if you let me knbow the exact error message, well, you never know .......

2002-06-18, 1:45 pm

I will copy the exact wording down tomorrow and post tomorrow evening, thanks for the help.

We are running office professional with service pack 2 if this helps.

How did you install the software? Using then administrator account or granting the user admin rights then installing it when you log on as them?

philf

2002-06-18, 1:51 pm

I always build the meachine - put 128 bit encryption on it - apply all the windows update updates to it and then install Office 97 SR2 with a full install
Sexy Lexy

2002-06-18, 1:59 pm

I install Windows 2000, the service packs and hotfix's the put the user in the administrators group log on as them and do a full install of office 97 then apply SR2.

Then when opening a document I get the error message. Are you on a FAT or an NTFS partition?

philf

2002-06-18, 2:53 pm

I'm working with NTFS partitions - however, I am using office 97 pro with the SR2 pre-installed i.e. its a sr2 disk

SR" comes in 2 flavours sr2a and sr2b - sr2a doesn't work so you may want to re-download the latest sr2 from the web or buy a media kit (about £ 15 or $ 20) for a copy of 97 with sr2 integrated into it - perfectly legal and available from most major software houses.

The other thing to bear in mind is that if you're installing vanilla office 97 you shoudl install sr1 before sr2 (no roll up package with sr2 !)

Just a thought, try a new machine and put office 97 on it with no service pack and see if you get the same problem. If it works with no problem, and if your feeling brave, put sr1 on (that wa snotoriously pants as well) - if it still works add sr2 and see if it falls over then - may just point you at which part of the install is bad and just an idea (you may already have tried this)

like a comp[lete idiot, I've just built a new machine and put office 97 on it and i've got to say, I dont get the error - opens up files saved to its own hard drive - files across the network - files created in office 2k - not a problem

My guess, see my previous post but I'm definitely not going mad, with the disks I use, it works fine.

So, try it without the office service pack and let us know how you get on

For what it's worth I applied the first service pack, restarted, and then attempted to apply the second service pack, but Windows was being stupid and wouldn't let me. Bottom line is after the 1st sp the problem went away for me.

yup -= there's loads of stuff on the web about that which is why they pulled sr2 (a) and re-released sr2 (b)

So, if you download it again (25Mb odd) it might just work but check support.microsoft.com first as they'll have something about it not installing
tj

Could've sworn the b release is the one I grabbed. Not a big deal anyway since my problem with Word appears to be gone.

"A document with the name “filename.xls” is already open. You cannot open two documents with the same name, even if the documents are in different folders.
To open the second document, either close the document that’s currently open, or rename one of the documents."

This happens on every instance of Office 97 under windows 2000.

k - i'll have a look around

did you try what I suggested b4 as it fixed it for tj ?
philf

2002-06-19, 11:11 am

bizarre - here's what microsoft have to say on that exact error (see below)

Have you tried just creating a word or excel document yourslef and opening that in case its the documents you're choosing ?

I'll keep looking anyway but it does seem strange it kicks up the word for word error message

XL97: Error Opening File from Address Bar in Microsoft Internet Explorer (Q184159)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The information in this article applies to:

Microsoft Excel 97 for Windows
Microsoft Internet Explorer versions 3.0 , 4.0 , for Windows 3.1
Microsoft Internet Explorer versions 3.0 , 4.0 , for Windows 95

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

SYMPTOMS
In Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0, when you click the Address bar arrow and select a Microsoft Excel 97 workbook, you may receive the following error message:

A document with the name '<file name.xls>' is already open. You cannot open two documents with the same name, even if the documents are in different folders. To open the second document, either close the document that's currently open, or rename one of the documents.
When you click OK, you receive the following error message:
Internet Explorer cannot open the Internet site <file name.xls>.
Server execution failed
In Microsoft Internet Explorer 3.0, when you click the Address bar arrow and select a Microsoft Excel workbook, you may receive the following error message:
Reference Is Not Valid.

CAUSE
This problem occurs if all of the following conditions are true:

You open an Excel workbook that contains hyperlinks in Internet Explorer.

-and-

You click a hyperlink in the Excel workbook that jumps to a named location in the same workbook.

-and-

After you follow the hyperlink to a named location in the workbook, you click the same workbook name in the Address bar list.

NOTE: The error message may also occur when you open an Excel workbook in Internet Explorer and then attempt to open the same workbook again by selecting the same workbook name from the Address bar list.

STATUS
This behavior is by design of Microsoft Excel 97 for Windows.

MORE INFORMATION
In Excel, you can use a hyperlink to jump to an object, file, page, or other destination, such as a named location or a specific cell range. When you follow a hyperlink to a named location or to a specific cell range in the same workbook, Excel performs a Goto command and selects the location in the same workbook. If the workbook is open in Internet Explorer, and if you follow the hyperlink, there is no way to go back to the previous location in the same workbook. When you click the back button in Internet Explorer, you go to the previous Uniform Resource Locator (URL). If you select the workbook in the Address bar list, Internet Explorer attempts to open another copy of the same workbook and produces the error message in this article. The Excel Web toolbar allows you to go to the previous location in the same workbook, but the Web toolbar cannot be displayed inside of Internet Explorer

Thanks for the information but this is opening the document by double clicking or file open from the menu, internet explorer isn't used in any operation.

My error was different from Lexy's. Mine said "User Bob Mahoney already has the document open. Would you like to make a copy?" Even though it was a standalone, and I was the only one on the machine.

I too have MS Office 97 installed on my laptop which is running Win 2k Pro. It started with a similar error opening Word documents. I performed a google search and was lucky to discover a registry fix for Word. Today while working with an Excel file for the first time and received a similar error. I was able to apply the logic of the Word fix to correct my Excel problem.

Obviously use care whenever playing in the registry.

To fix the Excel problem, find the "My Computer\HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Exc
el.Sheet.8\shell\Open\command" key. The default entry should end with "excel.exe %1". The fix is to remove the "%1".

To fix the Word problem, do the same thing to the "My Computer\HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Wor
d.Document.8\shell\open\command" key.

I hope this helps.
