All,

I have a question for everyone in this forum;;;

Im wondering what do you guys percieve as your ultimate job???? What would charectirise a great network related job to you??? And wether you believe a CCIE will help you attain this job or not???

For instance; maybe you want to design carrirer class networks, or do private consulting for mid-size businesses, or maybe you want a job in the governemnt thats 9-5, whatever.. Im just wondering what other people in the industry consider there dream job, maybe it will help me understand the type of opportunity I presently have???

thanks for your comments

I like where I`m at.
If I could earn a little more money it would be close to perfect.
to elaborate.
I get to work in a large distributed network.
I have Lan and Wan responsibilities, I get to work with ATM video conferencing.
lots of Cisco routers/switches, PIX firewalls,
Linux, bind/DNS, Win2k.
I get to help design implement and maintain network systems, I do consulting.
I don`t have to do much desktop support anymore hehe.
This year I`m getting around $8000 in training "all Cisco".
Lots and Lots of hands on with alot of variety.
The place where I work has many facets including exhibit halls a 750 seat performing arts theatre, social and political functions.
A media team. a web dev team, a training dept, and a video production department.
It is federally and state funded as well as privately funded so it is a fairly sevure place to work.
I get lots of cools toys to play with.
A couple months ago a project manager came down and handed us a Panasonic tough book
a 3500 doller rugedized laptop "impact proof water proof with a touch screen"
for each of us because we are fronline support for a mobile data network for a law enforcement mobile data network grant.
I thinked I lucked into this job.

I'm pretty much working my ideal job for this time in my life. I work for a very large integrator/professional services provider (>12,000 employees on 6 continents) where I provide project-based professional services for medium and large corporations as well as the occasional government entity. Assuming I pass the lab, the CCIE won't fundamentally change what I do at all. It will just make me a little more valuable to the company be cause the status of CCIE makes it easier to bill me at higher rates. In my region CCIEs are two for a nickle so it doesn't exactly stick out.

thanks for sharing guys. I too seem to have my dream job. I work for one of the bigger software companies, desgining, configuring, and troubleshooting the network. Its all Cisco, and most of the designs are straight out of CCIE books.. The salary is good, but like every one else I could be making more. My co-workers are very knowledgable and that makes the work much more fun.

The only issue Im facing, is the hours, I mean its incredible..... 24/7 support is nothing too take lightly. Do all of you face the same type of issue????

I would love my job, if it was 9-5, or even 9-7, with some weekends, but 24/7 256days....

thats networking!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i guess i'll chime in.
i also currently have my dream job.
(i must remind myself this during my next tantrum)
i work at a public museum in ny and generally
come in @ 9:30 am and leave @ 4pm.
this is ideal for me as i have 3 kids
2 under 5yrs.

the drawback is that i am not getting paid what i'm worth, but they have paid for every cisco text and test to date. i'm making myself more valuable to them so they'll have to pay me when i'm ccie.
at worst i win and i win.
now I am working on css1 and cissp at their dime.
i have never taken a course and the only one i'll
take down the road is ccie lab prep.

My company is just started paying for training "my idea, we were closing ut a grant and I just sorta stuck the P.O in and it got approved.
I took my first course last month "CID"
and my next course is next month "BCSI"
and I to am doing the lab prep in a few months and they pay for text books. They won`t pay for tests though, weird.
PS: If you don`t mind me asking what are you getting paid?
Don`t answer if you feel I`m being to nosey.

chodan i replied to you offline

i had 10k approved for ccie training before 9/11
hit, since i work at a museum in ny no one came
so they yanked the training budget.
now it's pushed into next year.
this is why i'm working on css1 and cissp now. because i talked my boss into it.
he's only paying for books, tests and boson.

btw i am currently arranging to buy someone's
8 router lab for 4k.
he recently passed ; on his fourth attempt.

Hey darth that's not a bad price!
Currently I only have a 4500M with a np-2t and a 2501 and I spent about 600 including some cables. I am gonna gather some more $$$ and start buying more of these Cisco stuff.

Oh and are you gonna get a 5500 series catalyst for your lab or something?

My ideal job changes the more I get older. I love Architecture, I endured 7 years of IT Support just to get into Architecture. But I also like customer contact.

My aim is to become a pre-sales Technical Architect. I like working in Banks but sometimes its so serious that it can get a little silly at times.

As for the CCIE, well believe it or not, I am not doing it because I love networks. I am doing it because its a challenge and its one of the few technical challenges left.
