What is the ccie lab like these days? Tougher than ever?

I think MattP went to Brussels for the R&S lab quite recently.

I can't comapre with what it was like, but I found it tough - I have failed twice now in the last 5 weeks!!

Both times I came out thinking I'd passed!! I just wish I knew what I was doing wrong, you do something and think you have 100%, confirming the requirements have been met and you don't get the points.

6 weeks today for the third AND final attempt.

I'll probably get a load of abuse now from a bunch of Geordies!! The only forum member I know who lives that way is Wavy Davy!!

Back to the original question - I think the difficulty level is about the same, there are a lot of new technologies making it more difficult - but a lot more info about, practice labs etc.

The numbers are flying up, about 70 in the last couple of weeks - but now twice as many people are going through it so it isn't necessarily any easier.

Hopefully this isn't going to lead to a long debate on if the exam is easy and knocking all the IE's who have post 10000 numbers!! I've been working bloody hard for this cert and still failed twice, personally I'm not finding it easy!!

haha, good to see you can laugh about things mate. The fact that you are finding it hard, even after all your lab time is making me have second thoughts, as networks are not my strongest skill, but ill give it go

I know what you mean about those numbers though, Im gonna plump for the lesser documented Security track instead, just for that reason.
Mat P

I think that the numbers just carry on from where they are, so you would still get a high number. The numbers don't differentiate between what your IE is.

Have you heard differently?? Maybe somebody can comment??

I wouldn't worry about it being hard - I'm just slow!! Plenty of people pass on the first attempt. Interestingly several I know don't have English as there first language - maybe I read in to the questions too much.

MAT P from where did you took the lab training ? and how was that ? And before that how many hours practice you had done on the practice labs ?

Hi Hasseeb,
I was on a course in the UK ran by a one man training company called Kinetic Education, Martin Shortland runs it.

Out of the 8 of us on the course, 5 passed first time - he has trained about 200 CCIE's. There were people from all over Europe - as long as you have a reasonable grasp of English you will be fine.

I had an issue on the course, in that the racks were shared, this worked fine for most but unfortunately I was sharing with somebody who hadn't done any studying and I got wound up for 2 weeks (though he was a nice guy). Martin has now rewritten the courses ensuring everybody has there own rack.

The cost was £3500, if you want contact details PM me.

My study buddy went to Netlogic Consulting in the UK, but wouldn't recommend them.

As for lab time - I must be one of the luckiest CCIE candidates around - I have a good, well paid job and haven't done any work since last July - I've only been in the office 4 times since November, you don't hear of this sort of opportunity very often nowadays.

They had me doing a few other courses between July and October when I passed my written, since then I have been reading all the usual books and doing labs pretty much full time. The problem was I did too much and burned out!! Some days I was doing 15 hrs studying and not relaxing. I've reduced this now to a more reasonable 8 hours and feel a lot more relaxed.

I wish you all the best mate.

Whats the waiting list at the Brussels lab like these days? You seemed to take your second attempt quite soon after the first !
Mat P

2003-05-08, 11:32 am

You can get in tomorrow if you wanted, it's just if you want to book a few months in advance you might struggle. Seats have to be cancelled at least 30 days before the lab and there are normally places last minute.

You have to leave 30 days between attempts, I left it 31!!

A week ago there wasn't any seats for the 18th June, in the last 3 days 3 seats have come up - I'm going with a couple of mates which will help relax.

Matt, If i dont speak to you before then, the Brummies wish you all the best, if you dont pass, remember, its not the end of the world.

But as a side note, most people pass on their 3rd attempt, so its looking good for third time lucky

all the best mat, good luck.

when do we need to pay up, after scheduling the lab, and for cancellation, any charges?

i always see some dates available in Bangalore, within the next 20-30 days, is it due to cancellations?

is there a sort of waiting-list procedure here?, so if a guy cancells, i may get a chance?

regards
Mat P

If you see a date grab it. Once a seat is cancelled it's first come first served.

You have to pay at least 28 or 30 days before your lab date.

Thankyou MAT P for your valueable input . Actually last year my company offered me that they can send me for the ccie lab training but i have to pass the lab with in 6 months . And i don,t need to go on calls . Just study study and study but i rejected that offered because ccie written was not cleared and i think so it will take 1 year to give the lab so i can,t stick with same salary for 1 & half year . My salary is ok better then many people but i am thinking to switch job with more salary with that extra money may be i can buy my own lab or may be if my company increases my salary after CCSP then i may accept my company offer .
Secondaly I wana ask you that if i get 9 routers with 2 3550 switches and isdn simulators then i can practice by myself for the lab exam , after that i still need to take the lab course ?Is it must to pass on 1st try ? IF i have to pass the lab exam on 3rd attempt then why should i go for the course . If you compare the lab fees and course fees you will see a big difference like :

Lab Course fees 6000$
Lab exam fees 1300$b
so if you multiply 1300$ * 3 = 3900 $

6000
-3900
------
2900$ saving .
so you still save money for 2 more lab attempts

but if i will take course and then pass the lab on 3rd then this amount becomes doubbles . What do you guys think of this idea ?

Hasseb,
That was what work did with me - I told them it was unrealistic and too stressfull, but they didn't care. They just wanted to be silver partners by Feb - It's now May!! I wanted 18 months, but still working part time. My study buddy hasn't passed either.

All I can say is do you really want to plan on 3 attempts?

If I had my time again I would do 4 things-
1. Buy a lab - I used www.yeti-gbr1.co.uk and still do, he's missing a 3550 but I added my own - he's very flexible.
2. Go on NMC-1 - for the basics
3. Buy IP Expert labs - these are excellent, I have access as a friend brought them but only when I'm with him. They really are good. When I do my 2nd CCIE I will be buying these (voice).
4. Go on NMC-2
and
5 Pass!!

If you have to take a further 2 attempts, possibly over 3 months, what are them 3 months worth to you? Personally I would rather spend the money and pass first time. I haven't seen my family, my friends - my Kids - I'm starting to feel that when I pass I won't have anybody to celebrate with! ;-)

Anyway - it's saturday, I'm off shopping and then to Yeti's to do a lab!!! If I had passed first time I could have been playing golf, oh well - my next goal is to learn how to spoil a goof walk!

Theres always next month ;-)

Actually i saw some people passing the lab exam on 3rd attempt after they took tha course and i also saw some people passing the lab on 3rd attempt with the course thats why i am thinking like this .

sorry i mean with the course and with the course also . Some of them took training from Dubai and ccbootcamp .

I have heard that before, that all lot of people pass it the third time and almost everyone on the fourth attempt.
Mat P

2003-05-14, 1:23 am

Good - only two more attempts......

I heard of one guy on Groupstudy who claimed he had taken the lab 11 times and still not passed - at least he's determined
mosam

2003-05-19, 3:49 am

well, third is a charm, hieh?!

11 attempts?!!!!!!!.. maaaan... that means he has been doing this *at least* for a whole year now...

jee.. I wonder what kind of study he is doing between attempts!!!
