Is this a complete enough lab to study for both the R/S and security CCIE labs tests?

2501
2502
2503
2520
PIX 501
1900 CAT switch
ISDN simmlator

routers running 12.
PIX running 6.2

Thanks

There were many posts before about the ultimate LAB and minimum LAB needed, but as for the equipment you have just included..

mmm.. I think u may need other couple of routers at least. Get 2511 to save lot of hassle when connecting to these routers consoles and you can use it as a router as well. And may be 2514..

I think this would be the minimum. Of course with no 26xx and ATM gears, there are some stuff u won't be able to try..

Thanks for the feedback. Although, I haven't seen the postings on the min. and ultimate labs before, I would like to undertsand how to set up an affordable lab. I know about the need for a 2511, but don't get the need for a 2514. Also, I don't understand the need for too many routers as the actual testing lab is of reasonable size. Could you elaborate on the need for a 2600 and the ATM comments. I have exposure to both ATM LANE, (which is no longer an element of the testing lab) and UNI and PNNI.

Thanks

Actually, this is the most frequent question I find in forums. Anyway, here is one of my previous postings,

-----------
No need for any ATM gears.. May be lab rental for couple of hours. This will do it. I would suggest you spend as much time as you can to practice ISDN, if you can afford a simulator, get one!

Check this link out,

When I mention ATM, I don't mean LANE, I am talking about ATM cloud and PVC setup. But for that, I would advice you to rent couple of hours in any online LAB to try different ATM scenarios, no need to buy ATM gears at all.

With no 2600, you won't be able to try IDS (in security) for example. Or some kind of authentication proxy scenarios. Beside, for R&S, you won't be able to try VoIP setup with only 2500, no ATM as well.

To simulate a LAB environment, you wure need more than what you have listed, I can't tell how many exactly, for not to violate the NDA, but, please check the above link.

Once again, thanks for comments. I tend to agree about the ATM element, not beeing affordable and renting time is a much better aproach. What about the VOIP and the IDS on 2600 stuff? Can this be achieved with a less expessive 1700 model. Also, can you elaborate on the VOIP practice setup (simulator or what), not withstanding your non disclosure agreement.

Thanks,

I agree with Mosam and darthfeces, I was in the same boat about 2 months ago with starting to setup a lab. You definately need 3550's, no doubt about it. Without 2600's you can't do a lot of other little things, like intervlan routing, etc. You could do it with a 1750, but those get up their in price too, and you have less capability. You need at least two 26xx, at least one 3550 with a 2924xl.

2 3550's are now in the lab

BTroadman, Darthfeces amd Mosam,

I agree that there are many items need for a "good" lab but budgets are part of every household.

I guess you must have a wealthy uncle Darhfeces. 2 3550 at about 2500 a piece, out of my budget. More power to you. party on.

2600 are roughly $1500 a piece, also. NOT A CHEAP SPORT, AND I THOUGHT GOLF WAS EXPENSIVE?

i was just trying to highlight it's importance .... and it will be increasing .....
i don't have a 3550 just access to them
at work. my lab is just 2500 series routers
that's good enough for the core topics.
atm, isdn and 3350 can be polished by buying rack time..
something like an ipexpert membership + rack time.

You can get a 3550 on Ebay for $1800, which is a little costly, but you want to be a CCIE. And if you are paying $1500 for 2600's, I have a few you can buy.

Well, all of us during this time of bad economy have financial constraints, but here is the bottom line if you wanna build an effective home LAB, (based on my experience for over a year in this whole thing R&S and Security)

- You need to have at least one 2600, whether we like it or not. In avarage (with no ATM and VoIP, 64 RAM, 32 Flash) it is $500-$600

- No need for ATM in your lab, rent some time

- If you are building security, you can get only one 501 PIX, would be better of course to get one 515, but if you can not afford it, get 501, you won't be able to use any DMZ setupo in case of PIX 501.

- Although it would be a real value if you have VoIP components, but even this if not affordable, can be substituted by online lab rentals.

- ISDN simulators are really expensive, but, GET ONE, IT IS WORTH IT!! TAKE MY WORD! I would even suggest you to practice on every single ISDN scenario you can even think of, see in a book, see in practice labs, anything about ISDN you see out there, try it out in the lab..

- All in all, you need *at least* 7 routers in your lab (including 2511).

- Would be HIGHLY RECOMMENDED to have at least one 3550, but if you can not afford it, get one 2924 and practice the difference through online labs as well. 2924 in av. is ~$200-$250

- If you can afford another 2924, get it.

- If you use online labs to substitute the absence of ATM, 3500, VoIP, I think it would be a budget of around $200-$300 spent on lab rentals (if u use it wisely)

Just quick clarification, whenever I say "If you can afford".. I mean its recommended to have such, but such component in the lab is not a real necessity
