CCIE Security Written Impressions

| I took the written qualification for CCIE Security this afternoon at Networkers in Orlando. The test was free, so my preparation was, ahem, less than enthusiastic. I skimmed over some of the CSS1 material the night before, but that's about it. I managed to pass with a fair degree of comfort, but I'm not entirely sure how.
The exam was much different from what I expected. I figured that having my R/S would carry me through much of the exam, but that was not the case. It felt like very little of my R/S knowledge ported over the the security written. The exam was very focused on the various aspects of security, both network and host level. I think I was helped by attending a breakout session earlier in the day that directly applied to a good part of the exam.
I think I would say that knowledge equivalent to that necessary to pass the CSS1 exams plus a fair amount of experience in the field and some general NT & Unix knowledge is enough to pass this exam. Only the minimal R/S knowledge should be required, frankly, since it's so security focused.
I think the exam was very true to the blueprint. The questions were well written and did not induce any unnecessary confusion.
My apologies if this write up is so vague as to be useless, but I've gotten more paranoid about the NDA since I have more to lose at this point and don't want to appear to violate it.

| congrats man knew you'd do it.
that's how i felt about cissp ...
had no idea i passed until i saw the result.
i think honestly that your accumulated knowledge
allows you to easily rule out wrong answers
and kind of "work backwards"
this was kind of my strategy for cissp. | |

is it free for everyone there or you have to pre-register for it??

Everyone registered at Networkers was entitled to one free exam. I believe you can also take additional exams at a discounted price is space permits, but I could be wrong.

You mean go on vacation for a week? Yeah, I did that.
The lab isn't available in RTP yet, so I'm scheduled at the earliest date in San Jose, which is sometime around the end January. Sigh....

| RTP means I can drive up the night before and drive home after I finish. The lab is enough trouble already. I don't relish the idea of being in a different timezone. Knowing me, I'll wake up at 3 AM raring to go and then sit around watching CNN for four hours before even getting to the lab.

| I'll have to fly in. But I'll get to stay with family in the Bay Area, eat some nice home cooked meals, and be driven to the testing site without worrying about traffic on 880. | |

I did CSS1 stuff a little over a year ago and I read over the VPN stuff a little the night before. I can't say that the studying helped me at all, though, because the stuff I missed was either not covered in the CSS texts I brought (VPN and CSPFA) or it was or was too off the wall that I didn't pick it up. Oh well.
I didn't do great, but I can't say that I put a lot of effort into it, so I shouldn't be surprised. It was enough to pass with a comfortable margin, so that's good enough for me.
