I cannot see encapsulation command under the sub-interface. It's 3640 router, Fast Ethernet, 12.2 IOS, and it's brand new. Of course, I didn't assign the physical interface ip address. Yes, the interface is up. Any idea. Thanks smart people. I love this forun.

that's because you set it on the physical interface, not on subif

Enter configuration commands, one per line. End with CNTL/Z.

Thanks for that reply but the interface is fast ethernet and NOT serial. Thanks

If you want to set an encapsulation for something like trunking, try the command on a sub interface. If you want to set ipx encapsulation, then I think it's part of the network command.

Timi_

Here is config a of my router which has encapuslation of SAP. The only reason you would neeed to worry about encapsulation of the packets is dealing w/IPX ethernet frames.

interface FastEthernet0/0
ip address 10.x.x.3 x.x.240.0
ip helper-address 10.x.1x.x
ip helper-address 10.x.x.x
speed 100
full-duplex
ipx input-sap-filter 1000
ipx encapsulation SAP
ipx network 215003CB
