Buying Vs. Renting Virtual Rack time for CCIE Lab
|

| I'm looking for comments about preparing for the CCIE Lab Exam.
Do you NEED to buy the equipment to build a home lab, or is it possible to be enough prepared by practicing totally through renting rack time?
Here's the thing I guess, I can afford to pay as I go with the renting of rack time, but I don't and will not have the money to buy the equipment. (new baby, new house..etc)
I would really like to hear feedback about this.
Thanks,

| I agree 100 %. I cannot afford to buy a few thousand dollars worth of equipment. But I can buy lab time. I think I you dedicate my time. I will do fine. | |

| renting cisco lab will be just for the time being but if you buy equipment then these will be with you always as long as you wana keep them . And its just a kind of investment .

| Hi Haseeb...There going for real bargin prices on http://www.ebay.co.uk at the moment I saw a full blown CCIE lab go for just £5,600($8,000) last week that included all the ATM, TokenRing & The ISDN Sim... It made me sick as a .... I would have bought it if I'd had the money. | |

| well i am not also very rich man . But since begininng my routine is that i do job get some money & do course get more better job get some money and do course i had always took risks in doing courses without having money . and many questions come in your mind . WHat if you don't get the job after your course bcoz the money will be with the institute . But so far whatever risks i took are going fine . And for the CCIE also i have to take risk no other choice because in my company we got here some good cisco engineers who are more experienced then me so i want to reach atleast to their level and have to save my job also . got my point ? and i will not prefer ebay because those guys are not giving any gurantee or something like that . I would prefer companies so atleast we know the address plus atleast 90 days gurantee on the equipment . Actually my plan was to buy cisco equipment in march but i am very busy since last month . You got your lab right yeti ?

| The way I see it, when you're beginning to practice on lab equipment you are not furiously typing as you will at the actual lab. You're learning; reviewing; reading; so there's a lot of idle time you're paying for.
Look at buying some equipment as a short term lease. After you achieve your goal and those golden numbers (CCIE license #) then you just sell and recoup your investment.
Buy stuff you'll need to practice most things. My home lab has a C4000 as a Frameswitch, 4 C2501s, 1 C2504 and 1 C2509 (used as a terminal server). Eventually I can practice ATM and Token Ring on a C3900 using rented time. By then I'll be more focused and will hopefully use my rent time much better.
That's my two cents! | |

| If you are looking to get a couple of routers there are a couple of places like network4hire that basically lease the equipment to you. If you want to buy, sometimes you can pick up a good deal on ebay. Finally, try http://www.gettlabs.com for on-line rack access. They are offering free 2 hour sessions. |
