I got this message when trid to conigure ip address on ethernet sub-interface. Can some

"Configuring IP routing on a LAN subinterface is only allowed if that
subinterface is already configured as part of an IEEE 802.10, IEEE 802.1Q, or ISL vLAN."

It means exactly that. Ethernet sub-interfaces are usually used for router on a stick inter-vlan routing.

If your doing it on a 10mb ether, it won't work. Fast ether and gig only

Thanks for the prompt reply..
So iI guess Inter_vlan routing can only be configured on Fast Ethernet interfaces and not regular (10mbp) Ethernet.

Hi,

I used to do a trunking (dot1q) on a ethernet interface on 2600, 3600.

They are working fine until I put a MPLS VPN in the subinterface. If you are not using "ip vrf forwarding" in the subinterface, I think you can do that without any problem.

You can use 2610 but you can only use dot1q encapsulation to route between VLANS. If you have 2600 with fastE, you can use both ISL and dot1q.

(C2600-DS-M), Version 12.1(13)

Encapsulation must take place before assigning IP address. No encapsulations are avail for 10 mb ethernet port.
