I beleive MadChef stated that he recevied his CCIE # and it was below 9000. My question is this, at what number did they start the CCIE? I recall seeing somewhere that it started in the 2000's but I am not certain.

More to the point, what is a accurate number in gauging the number of CCIEs worldwide?

The CCIE numbering began at 1024 (2^10=1,024).

The 2nd CCIE in the world is Terry Slattery (CCIE #1026) which he claims on the cover of his book.

You can't tell the total by the newest number because there are a significant number of inactive CCIEs and the numbers do not get reused.

Believe Cisco's web page still gives a semi accurate number for the active number.

Sounds right if the math works.
9,000 (Total)
-1,024 (start)
-7,223 (current)
--------
753 (Inactive)

Cisco web page does states the following:

Total of Worldwide CCIEs: 7223*
*Does not include CCIE's who have inactive status

And this doesn't even begin to factor in the number of CCIEs who have multiple CCIEs but only one number. My understanding is still that you have one number. If you IE (can I use that as a verb?) in another "subject" you still keep the same number your originally got. So you have more people who have passed a CCIE lab than have numbers.

It seems like the majority I ran into until this year were R/S and Blue. The R/S and Security seems to be an especially popular combo now.

I was hoping for a 4 digit number but just don`t see how it will be possible now.
I have too much to learn and the numbers are growing faster.
