| I passed the R/S lab today. (I PM'd Yankee the verification info since I'm not keen on posting personal info here.) Suffice it to say that I'm sub 9000, and that was a goal.
While it wasn't a walk in the park, the lab is also not the beast that some make it out to be. The instructions were clear, the proctors were very friendly and there was plenty of time to complete the required tasks. I even had time to look a good bit of stuff up on the Doc CD. Granted you don't have time to learn how to do a virtual link from the CD, but I had plenty of time to use it to verify details and such. I must have had a lot of help from Upstairs, because I don't think there was any way I could have gotten a lab better suited for me.
Anyway, blah blah Doyle blah experience Halabi blah blah practice blah blah Doyle again blah Caslow blah blah experience.
Blah thanks for the support blah blah,

Attend to my much neglected family, for one. (My pregnant wife is quite tired of chasing around the 1 year old by herself.) Then to my much neglected non-Cisco tech skills, PMP, etc. I'm probably going to jump on the CCIE Security bandwagon too. That seems like fun.
And there's always work to be done on the sex farm. (Thankfully I didn't end up singing Spinal Tap all day long. Ryan Adams filled in instead).

| Yep he did it and we're all damn proud of him! Of course I posted my congrats privately last night after staying awake knowing I would hear the good news!!!
Love the part about getting a Lab perfectly suited for you. Ya think I could get one special for me, like using RIP and statics only?
I'm aiming for a sub 10,000 number so I best get in gear...
Once again, Congrats MC. You deserve it!

MadChef
I have read in posts on other sites that if you get the security IE you get a new number that replaces your old R&S IE number.
This may not be true but it is worth checking into since your goal was to get "and keep" a sub 9000 number.
My goal is to get and keep a 4 digit number
|
| Hi MadChef,
Congratulation on passing the Lab!
I think you are the first from this board that get the number.
Best Regards.
.......back to the Solie`s book, Lab 27 , DLSW+ Lite ???

Not true. Only new CCIEs get a number. CCIEs in multiple areas keep their first number. I believe Ironbrad has a CCIE in two fields, so he could probably confirm this if he stops by.
And if you want a 4 digit number, you had better hurry. My friend passed this past july and his number was in the 7700s. Consider that they've had better 1200 new CCIEs in 7 months and the 1 day lab was only active for half that time period. A rough guess would say that we should start seeing ~3000 new IEs a year. If you want a 4 digit number you better get in there before summer starts.

| Oh well a 4 digit number is not a make or break deal anyway, it would be nice though. | |

| PLease advise as to what you thought was your most valuable study tools and material for the lab. Thanks. | |

| Got to hand it to you - WELL DONE....I'll get there one day (If Yeti continues to kick my arse!) | |

Experience. And routers. And lots of experience with routers.
I didn't do anything special. Just read your standard texts and spent a few weekends in the lab. I probably spent 60-80 hours in the lab in the weeks leading up to my lab.
MadChef | |
|
| did you own a lab or were you supporting routers and switches at work, or both. You say 60- 80 hrs. | |

I don't own a single piece of Cisco equipment. My employer maintains an fair lab that I used for those 60-80 hours. Plus I do design and implement Cisco networks for a living, so that kinda helpled.

i'm not worthy
congrats
after everything settles down i'm sure your wife'll like the paycheck.
i also will follow up right away with ccie security. right now i'm finishing css1 and cissp in may.
i'm aware of all those books and the role they play,
but what practice labs did you use ???
i'm currently using practical studies and then ccbootcamp labs.

Those are the two I used most. At the beginning I did some fatkid stuff. I did most of the ccbootcamps and a few of the practical studies stuff, but not much. The bootcamps are older, but they're still fantastic for the core. And that's the most important part. Know the core stone cold and know where everything is on the DocCD.
I'm thinking of doing the CISSP right now. The guy I'm working with on the security IE has to finish CSS1 first, so I'm thinking I might try to do cissp now. What are you using for the cissp? Any favorite reading material?

Poking your hay
Scratching in your henhouse
Sniffing at your feedbag
Slipping out your back door
Leaving my spray

Sex farm woman
I'll rake and hoe you down

| wiley cissp guide and boson 1 and 2
this is what was recommended to me by someone who passed.
this was before boson had #3 so i can't speak on that.
though i'm not starting until i'm done w
css1. taking csvpn next wednesday and csids in april. cissp may 17 @ ny athletic club.
i was forced to do this cause there were only 2 opportunities for me that were close
may in ny or june in AC, NJ.
take it by the end of the year or you'll
be required to have a bachelors.
check the ics2 website to see when they are
testing near you or you'll have to travel.
oh and experience i had been the abuse contact for a 5000 user isp in NJ for 3 years. there are some cissp's who lurk here and in the cissp forum. after this my lab prep will hit full speed ahead. i'm thinking the end of the year.
| MadChef 2002-03-14, 10:47 am |
| The closest the exam ever gets to me is Vienna, VA, and it's offered there all the time, so I'll just pick a date and drive up. I've seen others recommend the wiley book, so I guess I'll pick that up today. I have a bachelors, so that doesn't worry me, though I'd still like to be done by June.
Thanks for the input.

I don't really know. I just used what was provided for me and it was OK for most things. Somebody else could probably address the specifics.

I had a 7500 as a frame switch and backbone router, plus it had ATM.
LS1010
4700 w/ token, ether & 4 serials.
2x 2524(?) with BRI & ISDN simulator
A half dozen or so 2501s and 2502s.
1 2612.
1 Cat5000
It allowed me to do most anything I needed to.

I know you cannot disclose the actual lab exam content that you received but in relation to your practical studies, how much effort did you dedicate to elements not available in your own lab equipment such as voice & 3900 switch configuration?

I knew basically how a 3900 switch operated before hand froma little experience, and I did a little basic VoIP long, long ago. Other than that, the only effort I put into it was reading the stuff on CCO and knowing exactly where to find it on the doc CD.
The best advice I got on my lab was to know the core up and down, backwards and forwards. That way you have PLENTY of time to look this sort of stuff up on the CD provided you already generally know how it works.
