I guess this one is built for internal or router to router use, huh ? Could I put it on my network and subnet the network using serial and ethernet interfaces. I guess I'm pretty sure I can do that. But WHAT ABOUT a clarification on the wic slot. This is meant as a wan interface, correct ? And what kind of modules can you put in there, and for what type of connections ?

Have you tried the Cisco web site??

All of these questions are answered there, for instance what WIC's can go in it. Try this -http://www.cisco.com/warp/public/cc/pd/rt/1600/

Then follow the links on the left i.e product documentation.

One of the big advantages Cisco have over the competition is the amount of information available to the customer, maybe try looking at competitors such as 3com some time.

Another big advantage is the IOS - pretty much whatever router your configuring, the IOS is similar - and this goes for other products as well (note I said pretty much!). You will find this handy for your studying, as it has all the commands you need for CCNA (n.b. this isn't the place for CCNA q's) however if you want to expand your lab you'll need other routers, which gets costly - ask yourself how far you want to go and do you really need to pay out all the money?? Maybe one will be enough for now, if not look at Yeti's online lab www.yeti-gbr1.co.uk he replied to another of your posts, or at simulators - which really aren't that good (the Simulator that is!). Search around the net you'll find labs and routersims.

Your 1601 is a good bit of kit. It has one Ethernet (10 Mbps), 1 serial port and one WIC slot. It is positioned for the small office sort of arena, possibly home office but it's a bit pricey. The Ethernet is obviously used to connect to a LAN, the serial port is used to connect to a WAN, maybe frame relay or leased line among others.

As for what can you put in the WIC?? Do a little research on the web site - once you get used to using it it'll get easier next time, there really is a wealth of info on it.
