| I'm new to cisco but... I have a cisco 1601 and was wondeing if I could use it in place of my linksys. My internet access is cable modem which uses dynamic ip assignation. Can I configure ethernet interface to obtain ip automatically. Also can I use conssole port as lan port.
Thanks | |

| ip address dhcp
Not sure what version of IOS that command began with but think it may have been 12.x
Also not familiar with the 1600 series but if it uses a full IOS then yes.
No to the console port.

| I believe that the 1601 only has 1 ethernet interface.
So it would not be suited for a dsl/cable router

| yeah, the console port is only for the initial configuration, (programming) of the router.
call cisco, or email them with the question.

| The only router in the 1600 series that will work for what you want to do is the 1605. This is the only router in the series with 2 ethernet ports.
As to your question about obtaining the IP address dynamically.......yes, it can be done. I am using my 1605 with DSL service and I have to tell it IP address negotiated.
Console port is just for configuring and managing the router.
Good luck!
