I'm new to cisco but... I have a cisco 1601 and was wondeing if I could use it in place of my linksys. My internet access is cable modem which uses dynamic ip assignation. Can I configure ethernet interface to obtain ip automatically. Also can I use conssole port as lan port.

Thanks

ip address dhcp

Not sure what version of IOS that command began with but think it may have been 12.x

Also not familiar with the 1600 series but if it uses a full IOS then yes.

No to the console port.

I believe that the 1601 only has 1 ethernet interface.
So it would not be suited for a dsl/cable router

yeah, the console port is only for the initial configuration, (programming) of the router.
call cisco, or email them with the question.

The only router in the 1600 series that will work for what you want to do is the 1605. This is the only router in the series with 2 ethernet ports.

As to your question about obtaining the IP address dynamically.......yes, it can be done. I am using my 1605 with DSL service and I have to tell it IP address negotiated.

Console port is just for configuring and managing the router.

Good luck!
