All,

I need some advice from you CCIE experts out there.

I want to buy some Cisco routers to play about with and learn CCNP/CCIE stuff.

Please advise what would be a good long-term investment on a modest budget.

1601 will be a good choice you can also use 805 but you can have only 512k bandwidth over that and you can also use 2500 series i.e 2501 and if you will buy 2508 it wil work also a a hub because it is having 8 ports

Only if that's all you can afford would those be a good purchase. Best advice is to start buying with the long term intention of creating a CCIE lab. This would mean at minimum getting the 2500 series, but preferably the 2600 which of course are more expensive.

Don't forget to get some catalysts for your future CCNP/CCie lab, simulate the whole thing.
I have 2 2600 series routers and 1 2900 series switch, hope to add more.

GoodLuck!

Darn I'm lacking these then:

1x 2522 (frame-switch) Ebay is a good source.
ISDN Simulator (can be bought brand new in the UK for £1200ish if you need the source PM me)
Catalyst 5k switch: sup1/WS-X5213 Ebay is a good source but you have to be ready to hunt and bid late though.

Note: that you can also use the 2524/5's there modular so you can play with T1, 2 or 4 wire 56K modems or 5-in-1 serial modules and there usually cheaper than 2503/4's
