They both cover different topics. Vol1 covers IGPs and Vol2 covers Multcast and BGP. They are both good books. So it depends on what you want to learn. Personally, I like Vol1 for the IGP stuff and Halabi's book for BGP. But it doesn't hurt to have enought materials.

soray,

i totally agree with juno. Vol. 1 is so easy to understand that you wouldn't even realise that its a CCIE prep book. I'm not saying that Vol 2 is bad. Maybe coz Vol. 2 tackles some the complex stuff like BGP. Haven't read Halabi's book though. From what I've heard its really good for BGP.

Just my 2 cents.

i don't think it's a matter of "better"
vol 1 and 2 are two separate texts that complement
each other in covering ip routing topics.
you should read both so better doesn't really matter.

Doyle volume 1 is an amazing piece of work, volume 2 only slightly less so. Weighing in at a little under 1000 pages each, though, they're not the sorts of things you read cover to cover unless you're a masochist.

The good thing about volume 1 is that as far as i'm aware it's the only book (certainly the only CCIE preparation text) that covers IS-IS in any detail. IS-IS may well be on the lab.

volume 2 covers EGP (which is useful for historical context,) BGP, Multicast, IPv6 and a few other things like HSRP, although roughly half the book is dedicated to IPv6 which AFAIK is not covered in the lab yet. So from this perspective, even though Vol 2 is excellent, it's perhaps not quite as relevant as vol 1.

Doyle's volume I is really great. I have not seen volume II. However, Cisco's web site has some really good material on BGP. It is clearly explained and covers all of the facets of the protocol. It is also free. I would hate for you to spend money on something you could get for free straight from the vendor. Here is a BGP link to get you started.
