| All,
Does anyone have a good naming convention system that can easily be identified and will describe a cisco device (router,switch etc.) anywhere in the world??
I'll start by including something like the one below:
abbbccddeeffgh>
a=Device Type (r=router,s=switch)
bbb=Function (cor=core,dis=distribution,acc
=access)
cc=country (us)
dd=state (CA)
ee=City (LA)
ff=Room (320
g=Layer (2,3
h=Instance (1
I am sure, someone at some point will face this challenge of coming up with a good naming scheme.....
Let's work together and come up with the best naming convention!!

| I concur. I want my naming scheme to be of local significance (by local I mean of significance to our techs and only our techs). You need a naming scheme on a large network to aid troubleshooting but you don't need to make standard to invite unwanted visitors to your exposed network.

| I agree with you 100%.
I forgot to mention that this will definitely and only apply to internal devices. The scenario is:
if you manage over 5,000 devices worldwide (internal private network) you will definitely need a good naming scheme that will identify the device/location and ease the troubleshooting process.
thanks for the replies/ and maybe all can contribute to the original idea of building the best naming convention out there... | |

| I would keep it simple..
For example, xxyyzzz where xx is the country code e.g kr fop Korea, yy for device, e.g rt for router sw for switch etc and zzz as running counter in digits.
As to more uniquely identification of devices, I would prefer to group the device under DNS domain .. e.g
krrt001.dc1.company.com
krrt001.dc2.compamy.com referring to different devices but dc identified data centres ..
of course, to hide all these from external world, I would use only internal domain name.
$0.02 worth of thoughts ..
