| I'll be taking the CCIE Written exam probably next wednesday or thursday.
Does anybody have any tips to give me? What are some common pitfalls?
I bought a copy of the Sybex CCIE book and found that I knew probably 90-95% of the stuff in it by rote; what other materials would you guys recommend?
TIA,

| Hey Sid,
I think lcooper posted about his recent experience with the CCIE written exam. Look at the threads in this forum over the last month or so (they're no too many anyway...)

| You will be surprised how easy the written exam really is. The written exam itself does not go into too much detail, but it covers a wide range of topics. I would suggest that you use the boson exams and read Andrew Bruce Caslows's book Bridges,Routers and Switches for CCIEs. the exam itself is not that hard. But you must know the materials at hand. When in doubt be prepared to be asked anything. Good luck!

| i think it would be kind of short-sighted
to describe what is considered to be the single
hardest computer based industry exam as "easy"
it is a "qualification for the lab" which is not
easy.
i take it next wednesday and have passed every
cisco exam i have taken and am scared enough
that i don't want to drop 300 again if possible.
though i accept the fact that there is a real
possiblity i could fail this , most people learn
from the initial mistakes and pass the second time.

| Why do you think it's the "hardest computer based industry exam"?
Most people who have taken the exam find that it's alot easier than the CCNP exams, myself included. The written exam does not go into detail like the CCNP.
I think people think it's hard is because it IS a qualifier for the lab which is extremely brutal, so naturally they think it's going to be tough to pass the qualification exam. You don't have the luxury of knowing how many answers there are to the questions and it covers a broader range of topics. But you have to remember that exam 350-001 has been around WAY before the CCNP. It is in the process of being revamped.
You have to consider many factors why people percieve that it's "hard".
1)$300.00 US dollars per exam. Who wants to blow $300 bucks? Naturally, you have financial loss if you fail.
2)100 questions. That's alot of questions unlike the CCNP which ranges from 60-75.
3)Broad range of topics. What topics do I focus on? The CCNP exams had a topic you can concentrate on one at a time. People get worried that there's so much materials to cover and that they need study everything.
I understand that it's a challenge. But if you think you know your stuff, then the written exam will be a cakewalk.
If you talk to alot fo CCIEs out there, you'll find that alot of them will agree that the written is not that hard. If you fail it the first time, take it as a learning experience.
Good luck on Wednesday and let me know who you do. I'm pretty confident that you'll walk out of the exam feeling disappointed as I was. If anybody would like some help, plese feel free to email me at junovtv@hotmail.com I would be happy to help out.

I'm with you on that one. I essentially took the written on a whim because I had a free day. Afterwards it became very apparent why there is a backlog of Lab candidates.

So MadChef, are you studying for your lab? How's that going?

No, I'm not studying for my lab. I have a lab date for March, but I'll probably cancel it and won't re-book. Recent events have meant that I haven't done any technical work in some time and won't be doing any in the forseeable future (which extends up to next summer at least). I'm doing project management work. There is a technical basis to it, but it's insignificant really. I could continue to pursue the IE, but without doing things daily as part of my job it would take too much of my personal time. I have no intention of sacrificing time with my son for a certification.
Instead of the lab, I'll start cataloging my project management experience and get my PMP instead. After I do that I may queue up for the lab if the situation warrents it.
