Depends on the terminal program you are using to connect.

Try upgrading to the newer version of Hyperterminal. This worked for me...

You don't. You get the very capable and FREE Tera Term.
http://hp.vector.co.jp/authors/VA002416/teraterm.html

While the upgrade for HyperTerminal is free for personal use, Tera Term is free, period. It comes with a great variety of terminal emulations and there's even a free ssh module. Plus all the really cool engineers use it.
If you insist on upgrading hyperterminal, try www.hilgraeve.com. But try Tera Term. you'll like it.

I heard that the PCs in the LAB only have Hyperterminal installed, no TeraTerm. So we may have to get familiar with Hyperterminal instead.

This is true, so you need to be familiar with Hyperterminal for the lab. However, since my day to day involvment with Cisco devices has objectives other than Lab prep, tera term and secureCRT sure make my life easier.

UPDATE..

I do not have any problems by using Windows 98 Hyperterminal, and also as Windows 2000 after installed SP II.
