Continuing from two threads ago when I was asking how long SK0-001 would be available (Q1 '05 was the answer):

I used Sybex and the Server+ Certification Bible, the later being what everyone seems to mention for this cert. I always use Sybex/ExamCram but decided to change this time and I was happy with both. I also skipped my usual Transcender tests and just used the 260 questions that the Server+ Bible included. Those questions were put into the Boson test engine and were suprisingly great. Sybex also included their usual barage of questions on CD.

Most people mention that there are a lot of SCSI/RAID questions. I'd say about 7 out of the 80 for me. There's much more emphasis though on troubleshooting anything and everything. "X isn't working, you've looked at this and that and the other, what will you check next?". Troubleshooting was one area that's being downsized for the new objectives. Probably not a bad idea, I felt it was a bit much and became boring. Heavier emphasis on general server technology questions should make the 2005 test more interesting.

Difficulty-wise, this test is generally considered tough. But if you have A+ and Network+, it's nothing to be affraid of.

Side note on buying the books: I took a chance on buying the Sybex book from one of the Amazon market sellers. The seller I chose had several new copies for $10 less than Amazon's own price, and it arrived in perfect shape minus the minor belmish. Overall very happy with buying this way, just have to watch out for 1st and 2nd edition differences when you buy from these guys.

Just call me Rover.

BTW I'd intended to post a few observations about my Server+ exam, but never got around to it. My experience was not too similar to others, and it may all change with the new objectives, but for what it's worth, here's what I got:

1) I thought time would be a problem. I mean, 80 questions in 90 minutes gives you just over one minute per question. However, I worried in vain. Time was more than adequate.

2) No multi-choice questions (i.e. no check-boxes)

3) Not a lot of scenario questions, and only one long one.

4) Half of the questions were very fair.

5) One-quarter of the questions were incredibly easy – anyone stumbling in off the street could have answered them.

6) One-quarter of the questions were incredibly subjective – good arguments could have been made for more than one answer. These mostly revolved around disaster recovery issues, environmental issues, best practices, and so forth -- in other words “soft” rather than “hard” issues, issues that could be handled differently by different companies. These questions were the fulcrum of my exam. Passing or failing depended on how well I handled them.

7) Something else everyone should be aware of -- Server+ books can be wrong. One of the books I used made a point about PCI-X that seemed odd, so I looked it up on the Internet to confirm it, and discovered that every other source disagreed with the book.

Sure enough, that very point came up on the exam and I did not give the book answer, but the one I had verified on the Internet. (Trying to figure out which questions you missed on the exam can be difficult, but I think I answered the question correctly.)

The same thing happened with another book I used, which gave an exam tip on SNMP. That question too popped up on the exam and I answered the way the book suggested, and I think it was the wrong answer.

No matter which book you’re using, check to see if the publisher has issued any errata.

Cheers!

Eucharist is right on. Those are very intuitive observations and helpful to anyone looking at this test. I think the most important observation you made was on the multi-choice questions. Those always intimidate me, and my last 2 CompTIA's have not had a single one.

P.S. I had the same PCI-X/SNMP questions that were incorectly noted in my book/practice tests.
