Wondering.. I was talking to one of the test administrators at a local Prometric testing center and his advice was to take the ComTIA Server+ test soon after completing CompTIA A+ his reasoning was that a good portion of the same material is covered on both tests and there would be less to prepare for. In my experience most people suggest CompTIA Network + as the next step.

Was he correct does the CompTIA Server+ material follow the CompTIA A+ material?

I have over 10 years of experience in the field and have just decided to start the certification process and am looking for any input on test taking order, I did think that I would get the CompTIA testing done before moving onto the Microsoft testing process..

Thanx

Hi Richard,

You might ask the test administrator you spoke with if he has taken the Server+ exam. IMO, I would suggest Network+ as a next step. According to CompTIA, 8% of Network+ objectives overlap to A+. 10% of the Server+ objectives overlap A+. 19% of the Server+ objectives overlap Network+. 25% of i-Net+ objectives overlap Network+.

A great deal of the Server+ exam is focused on scenerio questions. It is very experienced based and targeted at the technician with 2 years of Server experience.

Are there any other exams besides A+ and Network+ that I can take before Server+ which can help me pass Server+ easier?

Worry more about learning practical material first then the exams. Cert's should be a benchmark of your knowledge and not your test taking ability : ) As a hiring manager, I can always tell the candidates that are focused on exams and the ones that actually know their stuff. Cert's may get you in the door, but knowledge will help you keep the job! So your road map should be based on where you want to go with your career and not which tests make the easiest path. Just my 2 cents! Good luck to all!

I can not agree more!!! I think a little piece of paper that says you past a test is not a big deal.. I have been doing this for 10 years and my practical experience is there, always getting more experience every day of coarse. Unfortunatly I need those little pieces of paper to make people want to interview me. For some reason employers would rather higher someone with little pieces of paper instead of practical experience, they soon after find out that the person may actually not be qualified for the job..
