OK folks. After a long hiatus, I'm back to studying for Server+ again.

Is there anyone who can explain is the simplest terms possible the GFS back-up scheme. Pretend I'm an idiot (which shouldn't be too hard).

I am also a bit confused about back-up media types like Travan.

GRANDFATHER, FATHER, SON (GFS) ROTATION

GFS is the most common tape rotation method. The number of tapes you use for GFS is based on the number of workdays you add data to your network. The GFS method work as follows:

You backup your data on a separate tape every working day. You should use a different tape for every daily backup. For example, if your backup cycle is based on a five-day workweek, you will need for daily tapes; (the 5th tape comes into play later). You can perform full, incremental or selective backups during the week.

On the fifth day, you will use a weekly tape. You will need 3 weekly tapes.

In the fourth wee, you will need a monthly tape. Since there are 13 four-week cycles in a year, you will need to have 14 monthly tapes.

The GFS rotation method is pretty easy to use, if you remember to label you tapes. Also, since the daily tapes are used more frequently, then the weekly and monthly tapes, you will need to replace them more often.
