Groan run on sentence alert. Be a lert, the world needs more lerts

A stupid device that doesn't work half the time that is a security blanket for software developers hoping to prevent piracy of a product by people who could not afford to buy it in the first place past available in serial, parallel, usb, gameport and ethernet and keyboard wedge flavors.

You guys are too quick! I'm really gonna have to put on my thinking cap to come up with some good questions.

Stay tuned...

A slot cover with connectors on it that appears to be the back end of an expansion card, but in actuality has data cables on the internal face leading to the mobo.

Maybe I am wrong but, I though that a dongle was the external cable attachment that is on some pccard modems and network adapters before realport was widely used.

I thought what Azimuth described was refered to as a key adapter.

I guess I will have to look that one up.

A device to prevent copies made of software programs. A dongle is a small device supplied with software that plugs into a computer port. The software interrogates the device's serial number during execution to verify its presence. If it's not there, the software won't work. A dongle is also called a hardware key.

to be fair, it's also a small cable with a connector that attaches to a PCMIA inside your laptop and has an RJ-11 at the other end. (unless you've got an XJACK, which is a registered trademark of modem manufacturer, MegaHertz)

so everybody's right.

Yours is right too but the name dongle preceeds PCCARD going all the way back to the late 70's. I got suckered into shipping them with a high end software package once, but only once. That lasted about six month till I finally said enough. I think that you will find that mine is the most common form since they are still used on software in the $5 to $10K and higher range.

This is either a bad question or a multiple answers question...

I always remember this xjack ad ran a few years back with the Greek Male statue holding his private area and asks where is my dongle?

Love the run-on sentence alert!
But thanks for the true definition. I would have came up with something like Lunatic's answer. Twister's been having too much coffee today.
