Thought I would go a different route on this question. Its the weekend and I'll throw an easy one at you guys. Note, you won't be seeing this type of question on CompTIA's exam heh. This is more for kicks.

Poor namrak. He's in a bit of a tickle. If he can come up with the right answer, he'll win the vaunted Server+ Certification. Help him out by choosing the correct question to the double jeopardy answer.

I'm your host, Alex. Let's get straight to the point...
Today's double jeopardy answer is...

"I help make performance monitoring relevant for detecting performance issues."

Choose best question that fits the above answer:
A) What is Samba?
B) What is device manager?
C) What is event viewer?
D) What is a baseline?
E) What am I doing here?

I swear I don't watch the show!

Yes, you are all correct.
The correct answer to "I help make performance monitoring relevant for detecting performance issues." is...
(D) What is a baseline?

To establish relevancy for performance monitoring, you need to establish a baseline pertinent to what you need. For example, if you want to know if your server can handle added network traffic from 10 nodes, monitor the amount of network traffic at light times, heavy times before and after installation of the 5 nodes. Thank you all for participating.

Let's follow your question:
What are the critirias to create a network baseline?

Uh oh, I think I'm about to be schooled here but I'll give it a shot since I'm the one studying for Server+. I would set up performance monitor on a Windows 2000 server to use the objects Network Interface, Server, Server Work Queues and Redirector with their associated counters.

I would run network baselines for a week during business hours. Now I haven't actually seen how large these logs can actually get, but I do know you can fine tune them for different time intervals and maximum size. I think this might give me enough starting data to come up with some metric.

Is this what you're trying to get at twister? Maybe others who've had more experience may wish to add their own comments.

To do a network/server baseline, the first thing you need to determin is: What is you business logistic cycle. The determines the time length to monitor and trap. ie: newspaper company probably has a daily cycle. Some billing company does weekly customer billing on Fridays, you get a weekly cycle. The baseline is to allow you to see what is your normal operation condition, thus to allow you to set reasonable trigger in your environment. And what needs to be monitored depends on business/tech reqquirment without lost of significant computing power.
