You are the server administrator of a small company which specializes in terrorizing newbie Server+ candidates. You are tasked with adding a new server to the current server room for additional processing overhead for which more terrorizing can occur. You are to find out if the old UPS can cover the new load. If not, make the necessary purchase of the proper UPS balancing cost and coverage. The server environment now currently has...

1) two servers rated at 6 amps each
2) one 15-inch monitor rated at 1 amp
3) network equipment totaling 4 amps
4) the new server rated at 6 amps

There was a 2500VA UPS running before the addition of the new server. Will it cover the new load? Yes or No

If No,
Which of the following UPSs will suffice?
A) 2500VA UPS
B) 3500VA UPS
C) 2.5KVA UPS
D) 6.0KVA UPS

Assuming that you are using 110 not 220 V.

The total amps= 23amps.
UPS are measured VA = VoltAmp
So, 110V * 23Amps = 2530VA,

So, it is over the 2500VA. It needs a 3500VA.

yea what he said 3500 needed. In the real world I would go with the 6KVA for a 100% margin or dual 2500 units for a little fault tolarance. Those batteries fail at the strangest times like 3AM Sunday morning on a auto stress test.

I'd go with the 6 KVA to provide at least 20 mins. of runtime and additional capacity for expansion. I always like to over-rate my UPS.

I noticed that everyone who answered all have Server+ heh. In anycase, the answer is (B) based on the quoted requirement in the wording of my scenario. However, I agree with you guys that purchasing the larger 6KVA UPS would provide plenty of additional overhead should the company need it. You guys didn't even break a sweat.
