| What is the failure rate of the Server+ first attempt??
I failed the test by a few points and ran out of time.. Spent too much time on the first 10 to 20 questions. I recommend skipping them, mark them and come back after knocking out the easy ones (Yes there are easy ones too) Wording is poor and at times convoluted at best.
Will try again when the smoke clears from my credit card… | |

| Welcome to the forum, Matt.
Hard to say what the failure rate is, as these numbers aren't published anywhere. I guess it depends on who you talk to. You have an impressive array of Brainbench certs. I took their server admin. when it was in beta but failed it, but I passed the Server+ beta (go figure).
Are you involved with HIPPA? | |

| HIPPA? Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996? Or some techie thing? Thanx for the welcome. BrainBench is cool if used for & acknowledged for what is should be.. A learning tool. Plus a neat place to put your stuff on. | |

| Yea, HIPPA. Are you in Admin or Biomedical? | |

| Hello everyone,
Just thought I would throw my 2 cents into the discussion. Before I took the test I was nervous about the questions and the pass/fail rate of the exam. After all $160~$190 bucks is a lot of money and I wanted to make sure I passed on the first try. So, I sent an email to Comptia to ask about the questions and the pass fail rate. The following is a the email I sent in to Comptia and the response I recieved from a customer service supervisor at Comptia:
--------------------------------------
I have been studying for the Server+ certification for the past 6 weeks I have several years of experience in the computer industry and over 2 years of experience working with an AS\400, Novell Netware and MS Windows NT servers. I do not have any experience working on server farms. I am familiar with SCSI and various other server technologies. I have read 2 different certification books and have read numerous articles concerning the technologies covered on the Server+ exam. I have started reading a 3rd Server+ certification book yesterday. I am planning on taking the test in the middle of September. The information from the books I read, along with the experience that I have leads me to believe that this test should be fairly straight forward. I want to make sure I am prepared for the exam and pass it on the first attempt. However, recent comments from other candidates who have already taken the test lead me to believe the test is less than straightforward. I have heard that a lot of the questions have more than one answer that is technically correct, however the test asks for “choose the best answer”. I have also heard that the questions are somewhat ambiguous and provide incomplete information to arrive at a clear choice for an answer. I would like to know the validity of these claims from other candidates. Everyone seems to agrees that the certification is a valuable certification and I want to make it clear to you that I am not interested in taking any shortcuts to certification, however ------$190.00 is a lot of money to spend to find out that I am not prepared on the day of the test.
I would like to know what the pass fail ratio for this test is as well as a response to the claims that the test is ambiguous and incomplete.

The following is her response:

I suggest that first you look at the test objectives and compare them to your study materials. This way you can be sure that they are complete. Please be aware that CompTIA does not write any training materials, this is all done by third party vendors.
Server+ is a tough exam. It has to be. You want the best people to be fixing your server. I have some advise for you. Look at the whole question and answers there is either a "distracter" which will rule out an answer and a "qualifier" that will validate that you have the correct answer.
I wish you the best on your exam!

Any way that was my attempt and the response at getting the pass/fail rate and a little piece of mind that I had a chance to pass on the first try. I must have been naive to think they would actually tell me anything helpful. | |

| Let me say that I think your question was excellent in its wording and content, I congratulate you. However considering that the pass/fail rate is probably confidential, I also think that she did an excellent job in giving you all of the hints that she could.
What she did not tell you was the key and I gather that she thought you were probably ready. If she had droned on about experience and going to a working server site etc. etc. then that would be telling. Obviously she was right since you apparently passed.
Thanks for sharing, that post is a keeper. | |

| Agreed, thanks for sharing that with us Lunatic. Both your original post and the CompTIA rep's reply was very professional. One designed not to discourage anyone from taking the test.
Finished up two books today: Server+ for Dummies (Gilster/Hungry Minds) and Server+ Certification Training Kit (Microsoft). By the way Supertech, Gilster has some pretty good insights like you said. The Microsoft book was very informative, but again, dry though the author did try to inject some personality with some of his personal experiences.
I still have to go through the Server+ Bible (Kay/Hungry Minds) and lastly, Server+ Exam Cram before taking test at end of month. Date with destiny is looming. | |

Ya know - I've taken & passed 3 CompTIA tests & my complaint on ALL of them has been the poor wording structure & bad graphics on every CompTIA test I have sat for.
My friends that have taken them feel the same way.
IMHO
